Something I just ran into. I had four drives hooked up to the mobo using the two IDE channels. I just added a fifth drive but have no way to connect it to the mobo.
There must be longer IDE cables with three
or more plugins for five bay towers and full servers, right? Clue me in, please.

nope. you have two ide devices per cable. Slave and Master. you would need an Ultra66 or mobo that can handle more ide devices. You could always get a IDE to USB device kit

The motherboard IDE connectors support 2 IDE devices per channel.

If you need more than 4 IDE devices, you'll need to get a (E)IDE Controller card. Some controllers will allow the use of 4 additional IDE drives.

Promise Technology Inc. makes very good controllers. http://www.promise.com/Products/products.htm#idecards

Ya, promise kicks a*s, get the ultra 66, add one resistor adn you have raid! And most ata/66 motherboards do not have room for more than 4 drives.

Killerbug's "most ata/66 motherboards" does not include a real goodie ~ the Abit BE6-II. It supports 4 of each! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif It also has FSB speeds in 1MHz steps. I can't wait for SoftFSB to support it!

I have a brand new Promise Ultra66, retail boxed by I/O Magic. I'll part with it for $25 plus shipping.

To all those who replied I thank you. My puny brain figured out it must be that I needed an add-on card, and when I checked back to see if anyone replied you confirmed it. I'll check into that Promise board.
