Only a little help, however:

Go for a T-bird over a "classic" Athlon everytime.

The full speed level 2 cache will make a BIG difference particularly as you are running at a relatively high clock speed.

A 700Mhz T-bird will be considerably faster than a 450MHz Pentium 3 (in my opinion). However your old chip aint bad.

Good luck.

Not sure about THAT big of an increase, but either choice will enhance your experience...(my "classic" 750*950 makes me smile every morn I fire it up) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Both processors are good but I still think the T-bird is worth going for.

My "BIG" may have been a bit misleading as I will do anything for a few more 3Dmark point, I think I need to stop bench-marking so much.

Hoever the T-bird is a slick piece of kit, but thanks to thekingofpain for stopping me getting too carried away.

I was reading at anadtech (sp?) that the T-bird and Duron are not CO'able. They can be underclocked, but not over. So I would go with the normal Athlon. I love my athlon @825 (can do 916, but i need better cooling--and this is just with bus speed increases..nothign else!)

The Thunderbird and the Duron can both be overclocked with no problems. I don't know what article you read on www.anandtech.com (http://www.anandtech.com) but I found a article on the site: http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1277
also go to www.tomshardware.com (http://www.tomshardware.com) for more info on overclocking Thunderbirds. I would definitly go with the newer Thunderbird then the "classic" Athlon.

Yeah, I read both articles from anandtech and TomsHardware, And I think that Tom's Hardware is right.
Anandtech probably didnt have the right mobo. Get the T-bird and oc it to 950!
