Hi,
Is there any way to get a modem to slow down to a reasnable speed so that it will connect with a bad line. This is urgent so reply soon - thanks.
Modem is a Compaq, and it disconnects from ISP as soon as it connects - others staying here have same problem with their other modems too.
I assume some instructions go in the modem settings in control panel.
Thanks,
Bendan

It may be your ISP. Maybe. This is ripped from another a reply I gave.
---------------------------------------------
Check your line And ISP by the following:
Call the "USR linnets" number to test your phone line.
Call the other ISP numbers to see if its your provider.
Ripped from 808hi.com/56k/trouble4.htm (http://808hi.com/56k/trouble4.htm)
-In order to really test your modem you need to call more than just 1 (your ISP's) number. If you are not getting 56k connects, you should try your modem with other local/toll/toll-free numbers.-
This is a list of some toll-free numbers, the 3Com "Line Test" Number (a toll-call), and links to various ISP local access number listings.
1-847-262-6000 - USR Linnets number - this is a toll call; if you log-in as "Line Test" with a v.34 modem, it will attempt to determine if your line will support 56k connections.
The following numbers use toll circuits but are free to the caller (as long as you don't log in):
1-800-590-4857 - (IBM Global network access # x2 and V.90 3Com Server)
1-800-784-3638 - (Netcom - supports V.90)
1-888-861-8490 - (MCI/Worldcom))
1-888-245-0113 - (AOL access x2)
1-800-716-0023 - (AOL alternate access)
1-888-296-3892 - (AT&T Worldnet accessV.90,x2)
1-800-638-1483 - (GTE Net access - V.90/K56Flex Ascend Server)
1-800-572-1959 - (Compuserve V.90,x2)
1-800-350-6885 - (Earthlink - V.90,x2)
1-800-853-7921 - (Earthlink - Flex)
1-800-534-7097 - (Earthlink - Flex)
1-800-304-4226 - (Shore.net - Flex)
1-800-320-4509 - (Ascend 56KFlex test line)
1-800-779-2966 - (Used to be MCI)

You can also add extra init(ilizations) strings from the advanced modem connetions option. The numbers may not be the same from make to make.
On a USR Courier, the AT&U33&N39 gives the modem an AT command that forces the connection rate no lower than the '&U' value of 33; which, for this modem, is 49333 and the '&N' value, sets the highest connect speed at 57333. If you (I) wanted to force a lower connection rate of 28000, the &U value can be lowered to 17. This reflects the 28000 rate for this modem. The &N value can also be lowered.
What you would have to do is find out what these numbers are for your modem. The AT U and N command itself is usually the same.
Having said that, this may not be your problem. But give those numbers a call to see if it's your ISP or the phone line. Read what's at the link provided above.

In the Control Panel, go to Modem icon, then properties, change Max speed, it could be your ISP or the phone lines but I had the same trouble with the 56K v.90 modem in my Compaq laptop, called tech support over 10 times even returned the laptop and they put in a new modem, still have same problem, gave on it and bought a 3Com PC Card, 56k v.90 and I connect at about 49k every time.

If it dials through and you get disconnected but it does not say loggin onto the network .. then go into the properties of "My Connection" in DUN and click server types.. uncheck IPX/SPX and netbuei and then put a check on Logon to network.

Hi,
Using their fax line again.
I mean to tell it to use, for example, V.34 instead of V.90.
I had the command for an ISA modem I had but I don't know what this one takes. The command I used to use on a friends computer was AT+MS=11 which told the modem to use V.34.
Thanks,
Brendan
