How have you been accessing the internet before this "upgrade"?

I thought all your comps were from the stone age...

he uses his folks comp. 433mhz limited time, AOL has own phone line in room. $20.00 was using a 486 from Goodwill $3.00 (such bargains I should find. case worth more than that.) between the two should be able to upgrade to a pritty good one. actually 133mhz is adaquate for most surfing, only needs a 3 1/2 DD. if the MOBO will take it an AMD chip would be nice. and reasonable.

Brandon###:
Would either of you explain the theory of why his processor is the bottleneck?
Either I have some disagreein' to do here, or you have some MIGHTY good reasons on why his processor will be a problem (keep him behind) in this.I guess bottleneck was the wrong word. It certainly runs faster than his RAM, Hard Disk, CD-ROM, etc. It's just that the chip seems the most out of place, certainly the most obsolete. When I said bottleneck I meant that there was more to gain in overall system performance by changing the chip than any other component.

thamk you alondra, for clearing up the haze. The reason why i have a 133MHZ is because im cheap. The hard drive was $71 ,the mobo was $30 ,the ram (i already have a 64 mb chip) was $54.Plus,i have an AT case,so newer cases like PIII wouldnt fit,so i didnt want to deal with getting a newer case.AND (theres more) PIII mobos = $$$ alone.PLUS a PIII=lot more, and needs pc133 ram which i dont have.I already have 72 pin. oh and by the way.I got the 486 for $3 because the retards at goodwill thought it didnt work because it didnt have a processor. It was labled "parts" so i snatched it and poped in a 486sx.Funny how they want $3-$9 for 486's but i saw an IBM 286 RGB machine with windows 3.1 and they wanted $60 for it.

Good price, but your processor is the bottleneck. And it's a slim one at that.

I dont really understand having more than 32 MB ram, when ya got a Cyrix processor :P

128 MB ram, when he has a 133MHz Processor? You could get a P II for dirt cheap http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You seriously dont want that **** processor.
Trust me on this, get something better if you can,
as long as it's NOT a cyrix.

sure wish the thrift stores around here were that dumb http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif before you buy a faster chip be sure the MOBO will take it. find out what the MOBO will take. list it here and some one can check it for you. also a newer MOBO maynot take the 72 pin simms. some boards will take both,
not sure, do you have simms. 2x64 or pc100
