Mykex, Yep..I kinda figured that was it.
I went on and ordered one kinda late that night, about 12 pm eastern and the drive was available and instock.
Sunday I get an email from Bestbuy that the drive is back ordered!
Today, I get another email that says they do not know when the drives will be back in stock, and if they do not have them in stock in 25 days, they will cancel the order.
I'll tell you one thing...this is a **** poor way to do busness.
At the very least they should have made arrangements to obtain and ship a drive to those that had ordered one as long as the site said they were in stock.
I doubt seriously I will be buying anything else from Best Buy.

With a price like that, are you Honestly Surprised that they sold out.
You know not all systems are "live" with "real time inventory" as many customers do not have valid cc info, shipping addys etc
They and the airlines "overbook" , that's the practice of selling more product that you can provide.

Well, doc...I'll agree a little here, but I have also chased bargains myself, and most sites will change the page when the item gets down low, and say something like '100 left', or something. Everytime I have ever ordered an item that was actually out of stock by the time I placed my order, I recieved a note right away, and the item came within the week anyway.
They waited from Thursday the 19th to Sunday the 22 to let me know the drive was on back order. I doubt seriously they will even get anymore in now to fill those back orders that were on a sale, and hope the orders will just be cancelled...
This isn't the first time I have read about Best Buy doing something like this.

This is the email I received from best buy this morning.
Dear Michael Hoffner,
Thanks for your recent order with BestBuy.com. Below is a confirmation of the requested cancellation. You will not be billed for any of the items cancelled.
I did not request that my order be cancelled. I've sent them an email to get an explanation b/c I really want this hard drive. Anyone ever received one of these??

I got caught up in the 'best buy' of the moment, and I really don't need it anyway..
So, thanks again..

*The Status of Your Order
One or more of the items you selected are on backorder. Unfortunately,
circumstances beyond our company's control prevent us from knowing an exact

your item ships, or for up to 25 days. If the item does not become available

Notice there was no answer to my question as to when I may expect a shipment, which leads me to believe they have no intentions of shipping more drives under that offer.

Thanks doc, I have already tried the phone number, 3-4 times...no dice, they don't take phone calls..too busy with specials they say in the automated response.
I went to the site yesterday to cancel the order, when I saw that the drive was back in stock...thats when I wrote them again to ask when perhaps I might recieve it...and the response email is posted above.
Yep. do believe I missed out on this one.
Too bad, really...I spend lotsa spare change on computer stuff for myself and my kids/grand kids...maybe Bestbuy would have liked to have had some of the $3000 plus I have already spent in the last 6-8 months or so...recon?...

Brother Bovon, patience my friend, you may Not get the drive, but if you do, it IS a steal of a deal.
BTW, I did NOT get in on the deal as I have already bought several HD's at much higher rates.
I wanted it, but other things were more important, like 3 CD Burners & 35 sticks of RAM http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey doc, well I had to get a new ISP last week because my old one folded up in the middle of the night. I went to Bestbuy to change my email address and could not find a way to udate it, but I just went to the site and now instead of saying back ordered, it says On Order...so, maybe there is hope yet.
Thanks...
Ok, I went back and managed to change my email address, so maybe I'll get something from them soon. Sure need to complete this machine for my daughter and get it to her soon, while her brother is visiting and can help her with any snags she may run into.

Your dilemna with the ISP is exactly what I warn people about.
Never, never, never use your ISP for e-mail.
When something happens to the deal, you gotta go all around the world and tell everyone your NEW e-mail addy.
I use yahoo & go.com for mine, yahoo mail will finally let you "Paste" text onto the compose page..

Hopefully I will be able to get the drive setup and apps loaded over the weekend, and I can ship it to her with the monitor I ordered for her at the same time.
She is trying to go back to college at night, but will have to skip this upcoming semester due to her husband being at sea (Navy) and she can keep up with the class/studies online thru the college. I wanted to get a good machine to her intime for her to get it going before the classes get started later this month.

Patience, my friend has paid off http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
You now have a very LARGE HD, a large FAST HD for very few Pesos, enjoy.
BTW, I do NOT do FDISK, Format C: & Sys C:
I am lucky and have an original Microsoft Boot disc that gives me the option to do a total install from the CD.
I simply make ONE click and the whole thing happens while I watch,, except you don't see all the DOS windows while they happen,, setup occurs automatically.
Great if you wish to use one partition.

Yeah, I know doc, what had me kinda antsy was getting this machine out of here. Somehow, I had missed this post on the 17th...may not even have come to PC Steals and Deals on the 17th...can't remember now, but on the 18th, I went straight to NewEgg and ordered a 30 gig Maxtor for her machine...as soon as I saw this post later in the day, I was hoping I could delete the first order from NewEgg. I sent them an email, and recieved a reply several hours later that it had been removed from order...then I went to BestBuy to order this one. When it was placed on back order, I was really kicking my **** all over the place.
As they say I guess...alls well that ends well.
I have most everthing loaded on the drive now...and should finish up tomorrow, get it all boxed up and ready to ship out Monday.
One last question...I have it connected to a Promise ATA66 controller card...and the drive is ata100...recon it would bench better if I had an ata100 card?..it benches at about 28000 now, and the one in Sandra to compare with is also an ata100 30 gig drive, and that one shows almost 30000 bench. I realize these are not realistic benchmarks due to the machine they were gathered from, but just wondering anyway if this new drive was run from a UDMA 100 card instead of a UDMA 66...if it would make any difference, or do you have any clues in this area?..
Bovon
08-04-2001, 01:24 AM
Ok, good. 2 PM eastern and UPS delivered the drive. Now, the 'easy' part, fdisk, partitions, format, load apps...ect adnausum.

08-04-2001, 04:04 AM
Bovon,
Most post confirm what you said already. The ata100 doesn't really take or get use that much if at all. Just like the situation, alls is well that ends well. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Bet your daughter will be happy when she gets the box. "Thanks Dad!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif"

The "reputed" difference between ata66 & 100 is not much in the real world, sure benchmarks can tell some difference but a ata/66 setup will be plenty fast.
That has to be the all time low price on such a Hot drive.
I have about 6 drives in stock and could not see the wisdom in buying yet another when some of mine are almost a year old,, and still NEW !
Bovon
08-05-2001, 01:09 AM
Thanks doc and engracio, thats about what I figured. This is my first trial using a controller card. I had an Ultra DMA 66 Promise on hand, and decided to use it in her machine so the cd drives, zip drive, ect would have their own channel.

MaxVal,
Best Buy didn't do you any favors. Save that hat-tipping for Doc because he's the one that gave everybody the heads-up on this outstanding buy. Thanks again Doc.
I just got my hard drive today. I am wondering if everybody got the retail package with a cable included. I got a plain brown box with just the drive. Please let me know. I was under the assumption it was the retail box I was ordering and should have received. I'm thinking this could be a refurbed or something...
Bovon
08-07-2001, 11:31 AM
Yep, mine is the retail version with the ata100 80 wire ribbon cable included. It also came in the shrink wrapped retail WD box as shown on the page where it was ordered from.

Anybody else get the brown box version??? I'm thinking of taking it to a local Best Buy and see if they will swap it out with a retail version. Otherwise, I will probably ask for a full refund.
MaxVal
08-09-2001, 11:45 AM
RAR,
Did the drive come in a W.D. box, sealed in an anti-static bag?
If so it's probably an OEM version.
Basically you missed out on the ribbon cable and the utility disk. Desirables, but not deal breakers!
MAX
MaxVal,
It was wrapped in an anti-static bag and the brown box had a sticker on it. You're right, it's probably an OEM drive. But now I have to buy the special ribbon cable (40pin/80wire) to take advantage of the ata66/100. Those cost about $7 - $10, so my deal is still good but just not as sweet.
