New to this board - looks great - keep up the good work!
I just built an Athlon system and need to migrate data from my tiny 2.1 GB HD in my old machine to my new drive. The machine is networked so I could back it up then transfer it, but is there a better way? I have Norton Ghost, but am looking for ways to keep my applications (for which I don't have the install disks anymore) but not the OS. I have 98SE on the new drive and do not wish to copy plain old 98 from the old.
Any ideas appreciated - Thanks!

easiest maybe to just hook up the old drive in the new machine a copy it over. i did that when i built my new machine. only problem is that if you don't have install disks for some of the software, you may have to use regedit to export the registry keys for some of the apps then integrate those into your new os for the apps to work properly. not to mention editing the reg if some of the app paths are different.

Thanks Ghost - Sounds like a plan. Will report back.

It's going to take more that just the registry entries. Don't forget that the programs have .dll's in the Windows/system folder and there may be shared files in the X:\programs\common folder(s).
One more option is:
If you are unable to re-install the software, and you are determained to have the second edition, you may want to consider imaging the compleate system over to a new drive and then upgrading Windows.
Normally I would never reccomend the upgrade route. Either way, your lucky to be able to save an image, and you have an extra drive. You can always format the drive and start over if one of these ideas don't work.

I've had pretty good luck using the program copy utility in Norton System Works. Copy the programs to a zip drive or CDR and restore them to the new drive. System works takes care of all the registry entries, dll files, etc.
