I went there and it was $487. scourge 07-18-2001, 02:12 PM Still $19.99 thru this link! http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.asp?Sku=695695%2D4&spagenum=3&category_id=2999&keyword=ECC+CL2&mnf=KINGSTON+TECHNOLOGY&prst=1&prend=50&mnfsku=&orderby=&SearchType= OR&customer_id=19&Pageb4Search=search&page=search%2Easp Richard_Cranium72 07-18-2001, 03:13 PM That's a great deal for sure. If I new of a way to get rid of some, I'd jump on it. It is too bad that it is "Server" memory, with the ECC rating. Also, getting WinX to see 1 gb of RAM is supposed to be somewhat of a task as I understand, even if it was NOT ECC RAM. I'm gonna make some calls and see if I can move some.. thanks DrVette gyoung 07-19-2001, 01:42 AM Saw this at www.techbargains.com (http://www.techbargains.com) : Dell Home (http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/default.htm?rpo=true) has in its Software & Accessories store, Kingston 1GB PC100 Registered DIMM memory for only $19.95 - 20%. $4 shipping. Search for 1GB PC100 Now I don't know what MOBO will accept 1GB ECC RAM, but I was thinking of buying one just to have a stick of 1GB of RAM! Na, I'll keep my $20. TOAD6147 07-19-2001, 05:15 AM "Sorry, Product was not found." Either it was a typo and they fixed it or it's a bad link. Didn't Doc say it was almost impossible to cut and paste the link to a Dell page? Richard_Cranium72 07-19-2001, 07:25 AM Well, I found the URL's at Dell to be as long as ones from Staples.. However, the link WAS good yesterday, I ordered 2 sticks just for giggles, now I'm sure to get an E-Mail about the typo. That's fine, the 128 & 256 deals are enough for me. Thanks for the effort though gyoung, keep your eyes open http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif AnakiMana 07-19-2001, 10:55 AM Yeah, Dell removed the link to that product after it sold out. I bought one and my roommate bought three! DrVette: what makes it "server" memory? AnakiMana Richard_Cranium72 07-19-2001, 11:13 AM Two things make it "Server" memory 1. RAM in excess of 512mb does not always work in the WinX environment 2. ECC RAM is mainly designed for Servers->> ECC Memory is Error Correction Control A slower memory made for Servers, not for Home PC's "Unlike parity checking, ECC will cause a slight slowdown in system operation." http://www.pcguide.com/ref/ram/errECC-c.html "ECC memory was designed with the server environment in mind. It helps to insure Up-time on mission critical servers by minimizing the potential for errors as data is written in and out of memory." http://www.amamax.com/index.html I'm NOT saying it cannot be MADE to work in the home PC, just the motherboard must support ECC/Parity checking & RAM in excess of 512mb AnakiMana 07-19-2001, 11:23 AM Ok, but can't ECC be turned off? Richard_Cranium72 07-19-2001, 11:41 AM I don't have a clue. Perhaps you can ask the question in one of the other forums. There are lots of people here who actually know about computer hardware http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Me, I just search for deals, slam the components together and if they work, GREAT http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif gyoung 07-19-2001, 12:06 PM Me, I just search for deals, slam the components together and if they work, GREAT http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif LMAO! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif I wonder how many MOBOs will actually allow you to put 1GB in a DIMM slot? Will it recognize all of it or just some of it or none of it? [This message has been edited by gyoung (edited 07-19-2001).] vintron 07-19-2001, 02:50 PM ECC can be turned of in most mobos that support ECC. BUT.... (that's a BIG BUT) http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif ........ onLY VERY VERY few mobos can support a single 1GB stick of memory. CptObvious 07-19-2001, 03:45 PM If you look on Kingstons website....it stated that there are currently 5 or so boards out right now that support this board....plus its an x72 stick, not x64//so the Slots on this DIMM will not fit into a regular SDRAM slot...the cheapest MB that supports this ram is from SUPERMICRO and costs 489 on pricewatch... I bought one and am going to EBAY it...if they honor the price... AnakiMana 07-19-2001, 05:13 PM What does the x72 and x64 refer to? AnakiMana Richard_Cranium72 07-20-2001, 08:37 PM With so many doubts regarding the Memory, I was compelled to do a drastic thing. "Hello, Thank you for contacting Dell. I apologize for the inconvenience. Your order has been canceled. Thank you John Hilsher http://accessories.us.dell.com/ 512-723-4442 *** Please include all previous correspondence with any further questions *** " Thanks gyoung, good try http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Nighthawk 07-21-2001, 09:27 PM x64 is standard memory and x72 is ECC. It's bit width on the data bus. SysOpt.com
