Hey Techs, I know what you mean. The Palm IIIx I ordered took about 1½ months to arrive. I had no idea it wasn't in stock until more than a week after I ordered it. I expected to have received it by then. At least they didn't bill me until it shipped.

I don't know. I have ordered from a lot of online sites including Buy.com. I never had a problem with them stating that they have the product instock yet they are really sold out. I think one way to help yourself to not fall into this trouble category is to make sure you refresh the page before you confirm your order. I have ordered things from a lot of sites and called in later to confirm the order, to find that I in fact ordered the very last one instock. Don't know, just a small tip from me to you.

Buy.com does take orders that are back-ordered, but it does not say on their website. I tried to buy a hardrive and a processor from them and one was on back-order and the other was discontinued. Luckily me being the pest that I am, I called for a status the next few hours, since they sometimes ship from where I live. The rep from Buy.com gave me that info.

i personally don't order from buy.com because they are famous for taking orders for merchandise not in stock, and not telling you this. i have read testimonials from people who had to wait 6 months for their product. i think there was a lawsuit over this, but the buyer lost because it was in the fine print of the purchase agreement. Also if you try to cancel the order there is a penalty.

Ive ordered from Buy.com at least 6 times, and all times i never had a problem, and got all my stuff in 2 days, every time.

I just ordered a monitor from buy.com, I had to order an additional item to go over $150 so I could use a coupon. The shopping cart showed which items were in stock and which were back ordered. The first pack of cd's I selected showed as "on back order" so I picked a different brand that showed in stock. The pack of cd's came in 2 days, the monitor in 4 days. I'm in Indiana. This was my 2nd time at buy.com, no problems.

I have bought from buy.com over 60 times and close to 40 other times for my techno inept
friends. mostly Always happy with purchase, had to put up with a few out of stocks, but when i am saving 40%% off wholesale i say OK! if you know how to do it. I use a buy.com credit card which gives me 5% back rebate from buy.com purchase and 1% from from all other purchases.(can be used for future purchases) (i just netted 200$ one over time so my new athlon is free) then i go though a coupon here http://www.slickdeals.net/category/a-c/?#4 or here www.flamingoworld.com/coupon.htm (http://www.flamingoworld.com/coupon.htm)

and put it in my basket along with everything else.
then i go here : http://www.ebates.com/index.jsp?referrer=doerofway

and sign up and log in, then i click on stores and go to buy.com through their link and get 3% more back in cash. (note, you must pass through this link last to get 3% a frame window will prove to buy.com that you are an member.)

since buy.com coupons are usually 20% off (note, sometimes you are a little short of the 100$ or 150$ coupon minimum, just find something like cd case, or fan or cdr's and it is like getting them free) add the 5% and the 3% that is 28% off. do all this on a free shipping day. combine something with a rebate and you can get 40% plus off!!! Now if it takes a little longer (90% of time it does not) or i have to put up with some little trouble for that... well i will http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I am a builder of custom systems and have several accounts at major wholesalers and consistantly buy.com is cheaper than the wholesalers especially when you use this method. It is like removing the middleman. here are several of my buys
diamond stealth 540extreme retail was 129 I paid 46$

kds 19 inch monitor retail is 329 i paid 150 delivered

sound blaster live platium with live drive retail 199.00plus tax i paid 106.00 delivered
cambridge soundworks desktop theater dtt2500 digital 5.1 dolby surround speaker set retail 249 plus tax i payed 160 delivered
microsoft force feedback joystick retail 129 plus tax , i paid 62$ delivered.
creative web cam plus retail was 149$ i paid 88$ delivered.

NOte that some of these retail prices have come down since i bought them, just means you can save more than i did.

Microsoft precision pro digital joystick retail 69$ i paid 14$ delivered.

I could go on and on.

My point is If you are not willing to put up with a few quirks, GET RID OF YOUR COMPUTER all together! LOL... but if so, learn how to use the web (legally) to save big money. spend the time! become a expert bargain hunter!
If not, join the masses and get instant satisfaction at a retail outlet where you can touch the product. the choice is yours...

Great post!

I have been using buy.com for 90% of my online purchases, and this averages 5-7 times a month. Using the coupons you can find on techbargains.com as well as other sites, I save extreme amounts of cash.

There is no better feeling than getting something for 40% less than you would pay from another site and getting free shipping too! This is the best drug in the world.

Do watch the deal of the day...I just picked up the NEC-Mitsubishi 19" monitor for 219.00 w/coupon on Saturday (free shipping too!)...now thats a deal!

Check back often as they make deals with some wholesaler and re-post the DEAL when they get a firm on the delivery.

Last check I did at 1:00pm EST,

Now it DOES disappear..

It did not go away previously.

Check as soon as possible in the day, on popular items like the 128mb RAM deal when RAM just started to fall, they sold out then got more, then sold out again, then got a few more..

So check back if the item is interesting to you, just maybe the buyers will locate some more inventory at lucrative prices..

Two comments about the [b]New Media Live Wire Fast ENet Switched Networking Kit[b/] It looked fairly interesting to me so I checked into it a little more...

1) the ad is misleading when it states Get 1 Gigabit per Second Networking Power right out of the Box
. It is not 1000BaseT networking, just the combine throughput of the five ports at full duplex.
2) I see the same daily(?) price at http://www.cablesnbits.com/proddetail.asp?linenumber=12 (I have no idea about that company though)

Still, thanks for the links Richard_Cranium72.

buy.com blows! I ordered 2 100 packs of TDK CDR's and they had a rebate from TDK. My order status never changed from processing. They lied to me and told me in an email that my order had shipped that day. But guess what? That was a big fat lie! Then I tried to cancel my order because by then it was 4 months with no **** CDR's but they sure as hell billed my cc when I originaly placed my order.

I emailed them several times to cancel my order but they never did. I called and then they canceled it. But then since by that point my cc had expired they said they had to mail a check, which took another 2-3 months with many lies telling me they mailed it already when in fact they never did.

They lied to me constantly and I will never ever buy anything from those swine again!

MadCap;

I don't THINK this is the proper place for vendor bashing.

If you'll scroll down a notch or two you'll see the correct forum.

Is that the ONLY bad deal with buy.com

I've bought over,, uh,, gee perhaps close to a hundred items without a single hitch.

And note, I have sent stuff back to them for credit when I made a mistake in ordering, quick and painless..

Any vendor can have glitches in the system.

I'm sorry you had a poor experience with them as they are my No.1 Vendor choice..

most sincerely

Hmmm odd that you didn't mind when everyone was going on about their GOOD experiences with Buy.com and how many tiems they have ordered formt hem and how oh so happy they are. But when I say they do nothing but lie you say post it somewhere else? Granted I should have just posted the link to my post on them in the resellerratings part but oh well.

And yes that is my only experience witht hem. Why should I give them another when they did nothing but lie to me?? "Yes, your order was shipped out today!" Only to find out ti wasn't. "Yes your refund check was mailed out yesterday!" Only to find out the person who handles that didn't do anything with my refund for over a month and I had to call them every day for them to finally send me my **** money.

You're right they lied to me at every point they had a chance. How stupid of me to not give them another chance!

Madcap,
You may have opened a can of worms your mouth can't re-seal. Me thinks that there are two sides to every story and we've only heard yours. Nobody's perfect..., yes, Madcap, not even you and especially a company as large as buy.com. The problem is they have people working for them exactly like you who, from a human nature stand-point, cop an attitude when an attitude is presented. I have dealt with them maybe 50 times and I would consistently give them 9 out of 10 on just about every aspect of the trasaction. There were a few rocky times but they always made up for the error or bad experience in other ways. In most cases a company will bend over backwards to keep customers happy and then there are those customers that nobody wants. A few quaint sayings come to mind: "gabage in, garbage out", and "you catch more flies with honey than vinegar" or something like that. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

this will be the end of it. I never said I was perfect but there is no excuse for taking over 6 months to give me my refund after cancelling it and again constantly lieing to me about everything. No matter what you say I refuse to accept that kind of behaviour from a company that is getting my money.

Hey, I don't think this is they place to toss opinions about a store or web site unless it is a warning of some sort, which then it should have it's own thread and not screw up another one that's not related.

My $0.02!
