According to Windows update it is still a beta.

Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet Tools Beta

I think that on the IE page they would show an update also. They are still showing Internet Explorer 5.01 as the current version.

Maybe it was leaked. The liscense agreement calls it pre-released software.

Maybe it is still a beta for w2k and not win98.

I just hope it's better than the beta version I downloaded and tried from the win update site. I couldn't get it to remember passwords, etc. Very annoying.

Good luck with it.

One of the sites said a MS rep told them they were putting on the final touches and the final release was imminent. Since ME went gold, and 5.5 is in ME, it's quite possible that this might be the final English release version, especially since the final international version was leaked early. Sometimes the Windows Update site is several days behind on releases. I can't tell you how many times IE security updates have been available several days before they show up on the update site.

Microsoft officially released 5.01 SP1 for download today. You can get it on their web site. The version number on my installation reads 5.00.3105.0106, with SP1 shown under the Update Versions line in the About screen. The version of Outlook Express is 5.5. 128 bit encryption is standard - you don't have to download it separately. All previous security patches are included with this new version.
