A friend is looking for a basic PC sys--word processing, internet access, printer.

4/15/01 Best Buy flyer has emachines 633 computer pkg for 399.97 after rebates.
Includes etower 633ids has64MB,12xDVD,15GB HD, WinME, Sun Star Office 5.29(listed on emachine site not flyer)...; 15" eView monitor; and Lexmark Z22 color printer.

Good Deal or Pkg of Junk! Would be interested in user experience or gut feelings. Thanks!

Could be either, depends on his needs & expectations.
A co-worker bought one of those e-machine deals with the $400 rebate for MSN service contract. He's very satisfied, has no clue about future upgrades, and would have paid the monthly fees for either MSN or (Uggg) AOL anyway. So for his family it was great.

But for a power user or upgrader, or anyone planning to go to DSL/ Cable, it would be a different thing altogether!

Biggest flaw I see in those specs is the 15" monitor. Too small for almost anyone these days. Kinda light on ram & HD space also.

I think he could find a better deal, really.

Ed... forgot to mention also comes with Free 1 yr MSN. I priced a low end Dell and even a refurbished one was a few hundred more for a sys that No power user would touch! The least exp ISP in area is $12.99 for Unlimited Service.
