First, What CD,DVD,CD-R are the best for the price? Second, I can't decide if I should get a 52x CD ROM and a CD-R or a DVD ROM and a CD-R. I have been looking at the Pioneer 16x DVD/40x which has been going for about $89-99, but I just can't decide.

I got the TDK Velocd 12/10/32, which is the same as plextor, from buy.com for $140. Used the $50 off coupon from TDK for the drive and $10 off from TDK for the 50CDRs and $30 off from buy.com. What a deal. I burned over 100cds in my first week. No coasters, fast as heck. Its not worth paying extra for 16X cause you'll only save a min on burn time and for an average user that doesn't do anything. And TDK has no $50 rebate for 16X. I also had the pioneer 16X DVD from the start as my only drive and again no complaints. I'd get the burner first since both perform about the same on cdrom functions. Then later if you find the need you can always buy the DVD. Both are great, no regrets. Definitely get the DVD over CDROM.

Thanks for posting the link. I am not sure if I want to go the CDRW route. How many times can you rewrite a disk? I am definately going to go with the CDR and DVD though.

CD-RW drives will write to both CD-R and CD-RW disks with no prob. As for CD-RW rewrites, some disk companies claim over 100 times per disk. I, however, never have any where that type of luck.

Well I haven't had a chance to use the CDRW media cause InCD doesn't run under win2k. CDRs are so cheap it doesn't really matter anyway.

Thanks for the link http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Yeah, CD-RW drives will both do CD-RW and CD-R disks.

I use about one CD-RW for immediate backup....but now that I have two hard drives, I don't need it that much. I simply copy and paste to the other hd http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif. But I use a CD-RWs to transfer large files to friends computers. The only catch is, I have to install Adaptecs reader software in order for them to be able to read it. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

CD-Rs are dirt cheap, as Camaro said. Back in December, someone posted a link in PC Steals & Deals for 50 CD-Rs for $10 with free overnight shipping!! THAT was an excellent deal. Although at Staples, they can be up to a dollar each http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

RobRich - I belive that most companies are saying about 1000 rerites per CD, maybe that's what you meant, at least that's what all the ones I've seen say.

Warthog - I believe the deal your talking about was an OUTPOST.COM deal, they were $9.95 for a 50 spindle, then someone found a $5 rebate about a week before they expired, i bought 2 spindles, the max on the rebates, pretty good - $10 for 100 CDRs, w/ free shipping. but these were actually pretty good cdrs, although they were **** compared to my verbatiums, and especially to my *stolen* sony CDRs, they were desent. You do have to be a little careful with cheap CDRs - sometimes the prtoective layer can be flaked off easily, sometime it take a good sratch from a desk, or sometime just your fingernail will do it. Have to be carefull sometimes. BTW, outpost only offers free delevery on orders over $100 now, ****.

That sucks about Outpost http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

I have to admit, they are **** http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif but they get the job done. The only time I can't use them is when making an audio cd for a portable cd player. Just plain doesn't work. In the past, I've had issues with them working in a portable with anti-skip on....this cheap kind doesn't work at all. I compared it with a Verbatim and Memorex CD-R - noticably darker.
