PogoLinux is currently giving away free copies of Linux for anyone in North America. Available distributions include RedHat 6.2 (Pogo Edition), RedHat 7.0 Beta, and Mandrake 7.1.

http://www.pogolinux.com/systems/accessories/linux/linuxcd.html

The current limit is 2 CDs per week per address. Pogo is even paying for the shipping. Not a bad deal.

Catch ya' later,
Robert Richmond

DOH!

This is what you get when you hit the site now.. they will start again Oct. 1.
_
(snip)
9/14 Update: Due the overwhelming success of our Free CD program, we have completely run out of CDs. We have received over 25,000 requests for our Linux CDs. The words has spread quickly and we anticipate next month will be even busier! We're working on producing tons (literally!) of CDs for next month. On October 1st, the giveaway will start up again, so check back often for updates. Each month we will offer a new CD, so vote below to determine which CD will be offered in November! Thanks to everyone for their support! Go Linux!

Note: If you belong to a Linux Users Group (LUG) that would like a large quantity of CDs to distribute, please email Customer Service for arrangements. We will gladly accomodate your request to evangelize Linux.

mudoggy,

I'd burn you a copy, but that may be ILLEGAL!

Early bird gets the free discs.

hahaha, Ya, don't burn a copy of that practically "freeware"! hahahaa

It's OK, I don't have time to muck with it right now anyway.. I can wait til October.
Even then it will probably sit on my desk until the end of Spring when I finish my MBA program.

S**t,I live in Europe http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif .I would like to try it sometime. But I hate to download it

1) I don't have enough room on my hd

2) It would yake way to long to download (even though I have cable)

Btw,it wouldn't work anyway because I have an ATi Rage Fury 128GL.Or are there drivers for that one now in Linux?

I still have not gotten mine. I send them an email saying that they should not have take more orders if they hadn't taken care of the first ones. They just said sorry and your cd is on its way.

I just got this off their site:
10/20 Update: We've hit our quota, so we're temporarily disabling new requests. Check back in mid-November for the next CD.

For those of you who have not yet received your CDs from October, the CDs are coming. Please be patient as we are working hard to meet everyone's request.

Linux is a GNU operating syste, thus anyone can compile and pakcage their own version of Linux. The most popular companies include:

RedHat
Slackware
TurboLinux
Debian
WinLinix2000
etc.....

Each version bascially is built around the same Linux kernel core, but the extra options (applications, utilities, etc.) are customized by the specific vendor.

Hope this helps,
Robert Richmond

crockett,
I was under the impression that Distro = "distrobution" In other words, who packaged it and distributed it, i.e., Mandrake, ReHat, etc.
RobRich,
Was your reply intended to answer his question?
