I would still like to know why this drive at ONVIA has 2mb Cache, and the one at BUY.COM has no cache.
Has anyone else notice that?

I sent buy.com an e-mail to ask about the cache situation. Personally I think it is a typographical error. I do not recall finding many hard drives (if any) in my lifetime that had 0 cache.

Here is a link: http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?loc=101&sku=10245435&PageFormat=3

To further make my case, please look at this next link, which is the 45GB 75GXP RETAIL BOX. I severly doubt there would be a cacheless model in a retail box, allthough it is listed as such.

Yeah those guys don't know what they're talking about http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

The Onvia.com drive is definately not a retail box model - nothing else comes with it except the bare hard drive itself. Hopefully you have some extra screws lieing around....

By some miracle of God, I had some (and not from other hds either...)

If you guys have questions regarding cache on a IBM hard drive, I suggest visiting www.ibm.com (http://www.ibm.com) and looking at the specs there..

Questioning an on-line vendor about such will no doubt leave your item of interest unanswered..

Richard_Cranium72:

Correct assertion, I mean if they didn't catch the alleged mistake the first time around, then they might not be the best to ask.

Shortly after e-mailing buy.com, I e-mailed the IBM storage division customer support and asked them about it. (no reply as of yet)

I am already convinced that it is a typographical error, but a follow up doesn't hurt.

Guys, I've got news for you.
The drive at Onvia Mfr# 07N5640 has 2meg cache.
The drive at buy.com for $171.95 has Mfr# 07N3931 HAS NO CACHE. (according to the specs)
Hovever, buy.com has the same drive as Onvia, see link below, Mfr# 07N5640 with 2meg cache for $184.94. Can somebody prove me wrong? http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10260063&loc=101

I stand corrected!

Just got off the phone with IBM tech support.
All the GXP drives have 2meg cache. The different Mfr#s refers to packaging. He was astounded to hear that the drives were listed with no cache.

I guess this clears it up. It does for me.

Perhaps I was a bit unclear.

A much quicker resolution would be to go to IBM's web site and punch in 75GXP.

In 10 seconds I had the complete specifications for this drive-->>

Richard_Cranium72:

You were clear, I had already been to www.ibm.com (http://www.ibm.com) and checked out the specs for their 75GXP drives..

I try to be as thorough as possible.. can't hurt to ask all related parties..
