I would still like to know why this drive at ONVIA has 2mb Cache, and the one at BUY.COM has no cache.
Has anyone else notice that?

Has anyone else notice that? Ironforge 12-26-2000, 09:54 AM I sent buy.com an e-mail to ask about the cache situation. Personally I think it is a typographical error. I do not recall finding many hard drives (if any) in my lifetime that had 0 cache. Here is a link: http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?loc=101&sku=10245435&PageFormat=3 To further make my case, please look at this next link, which is the 45GB 75GXP RETAIL BOX. I severly doubt there would be a cacheless model in a retail box, allthough it is listed as such. http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?loc=101&sku=10252896&PageFormat=3 [This message has been edited by Ironforge (edited 12-26-2000).] Warthog 12-26-2000, 07:11 PM Yeah those guys don't know what they're talking about http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif The Onvia.com drive is definately not a retail box model - nothing else comes with it except the bare hard drive itself. Hopefully you have some extra screws lieing around.... By some miracle of God, I had some (and not from other hds either...) Warthog Richard_Cranium72 12-26-2000, 09:46 PM If you guys have questions regarding cache on a IBM hard drive, I suggest visiting www.ibm.com (http://www.ibm.com) and looking at the specs there.. Questioning an on-line vendor about such will no doubt leave your item of interest unanswered.. DrVette Ironforge 12-26-2000, 11:38 PM Richard_Cranium72: Correct assertion, I mean if they didn't catch the alleged mistake the first time around, then they might not be the best to ask. Shortly after e-mailing buy.com, I e-mailed the IBM storage division customer support and asked them about it. (no reply as of yet) I am already convinced that it is a typographical error, but a follow up doesn't hurt. Myke 12-27-2000, 05:00 AM Guys, I've got news for you. The drive at Onvia Mfr# 07N5640 has 2meg cache. The drive at buy.com for $171.95 has Mfr# 07N3931 HAS NO CACHE. (according to the specs) Hovever, buy.com has the same drive as Onvia, see link below, Mfr# 07N5640 with 2meg cache for $184.94. Can somebody prove me wrong? http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10260063&loc=101 Link Myke 12-27-2000, 06:38 AM I stand corrected! Just got off the phone with IBM tech support. All the GXP drives have 2meg cache. The different Mfr#s refers to packaging. He was astounded to hear that the drives were listed with no cache. I guess this clears it up. It does for me. Richard_Cranium72 12-28-2000, 01:09 AM Perhaps I was a bit unclear. A much quicker resolution would be to go to IBM's web site and punch in 75GXP. In 10 seconds I had the complete specifications for this drive-->> IBM Deskstar* 75GXP Product Specs: Configuration Interface Ultra ATA/100 Capacity ¹(GB) 75/60/45/30/20/15 Sector size (bytes) 512 Recording zone 15 User cylinders (physical) 27,724 Data heads (physical) 10/ 8/ 6/4/3/2 Data disks 5/ 4/ 3/2/2/1 Max. areal density (Gbits/sq. inch) 11.0 Max. recording density (BPI) 391k Track density (TPI) 28,350 Performance Data buffer ² 2MB Rotational speed (RPM) 7200 No secret here, just a result of 40,000 hours of surfing http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif DrVette Ironforge 12-28-2000, 09:34 PM Richard_Cranium72: You were clear, I had already been to www.ibm.com (http://www.ibm.com) and checked out the specs for their 75GXP drives.. I try to be as thorough as possible.. can't hurt to ask all related parties.. SysOpt.com
