i'm in the market for a notebook and here are the components i will not compromise (minimums):
1. PIII - 500
2. 128 ram
3. 12" of screen
4. dvd-rom
5. modem & NIC
6. 4.3gb hdd
7. less than 1" thick
i have about US$2500 to spend and i really need advice on this. i'm currently looking at the toshiba portege 3480ct, acer 343tv, compaq m300. what do you guys think about these? if you guys know a better deal please enlighten me on them. thank you very much.

Go for a Thinkpad. Either the T20 or the X series. Porteges blow. Trust me, I used have a 7020CT.

the thinkpad x series looks great on paper except the PIII-600 is about US$2800. a bit over my current budget. any other suggestions? i have friends with porteges and they dont seem to have any complains. what did your porblems with porteges consist of?

have you ever looked at a winbook? they are usually fair priced for the componets they have, i think the site is www.winbook.com (http://www.winbook.com) both my father and friend have purchased one, and i think they preform very well

I had a lot of laptops including the toshiba. The toshiba was a good laptop as long as you don't need to talk to other machines with it.
If you are not planning on talking to any PLC or CNC networks the toshiba is fine.
I used to get a lot of conflicts when configuring it to work with wonderware or Allen Bradley software.
You are trying to get a lot of laptop for the money. IMHO

thanks for the posts. ted61 are u sure about it? it seems reasonable and there are notebooks out there at about that price, like the ones i mentioned. the problem is that u guys have conflicting views on these notebooks. are these complaints solitary cases or are they rampant and just about ordinary with those notebook brands or models?
also, i'm planning to buy online (coz it is about US$300 cheaper than market price) but i'm a newbie at it so i'm a bit scared. is there a site that u guys would recommend that is trustworthy and all?
the winbook looks really good with its specs and a really good price as well but its too big and bulky for me. at 1.6" and 7.1 lbs its not what i would call light and portable and i am after ultra-portability.

the dell machines look really good and their prices are even better. except i just have one complain about them, they're too thick. i've checked them out and removed them from my wish list because of the fact that they are thick and heavy. any other ideas?

sony viao's are a bit too expensive for the components i'm getting and i've seen a lot of viao's, they're not as small and light as u might think.
