Well I finally did it. Took a friends hard earned money and built him a computer. :-) This is probably the stupidest way to learn how, but I managed to come through it alive.

The system is based on the Aopen AK-72 mobo. It has a Athlon 550 mhz processor with 64 megs of PC/133 SDRAM, and a Seagate U8 8.6 gig HD. There are four fans in the system: one case fan in front, one on the power supply, one on the processor, and one on the graphics card. The graphics card you see is a old Steath 3d 2000, from Diamond, which was soon replaced with a Geforce 256, which works fine.

Here, to the right, you can see the HD in its gondola. Also, notice the extra USB connections (thick white cable) to the left. They originally came mounted on a expansion slot adapter but I removed it because I didnt want to take up any slots. The case, which I picked up at a local "chop shop" had a missing plate in the back same size as the USB plug. So I just bolted it directly to the frame.

Well this doesn't really live up to some of the crazy projects I've seen on here, like the water cooled chipsets, amoung others. But hey, we all gotta start somewere. I plan on building my own personal system sometime this fall, once I have the cash! :-) Tell me what you think of this one though. Thanks!

One is not enought.
You see you need one more,
2 is a company.
3 is a crowd.
4 is a family and so forth.
If you are as crazy as me
building PC. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Anyway, congratulation.
For you is a start but I been doing this since
92 ever since I bought my first 386 20mhz
I was obsessed till these day.

Cool. But man, that's a little tiny itty bitty fan you got on the CPU. I got 2 three inch case fans on mine. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

So do you people think that I should install more fans? I would, of course, when and if my friend decides to OC, but do you think they are necessary now? I think that the CPU temp is about 90-92 degrees F. That is just a stock fan and heatsink, sooo....????? thanks!

I'm looking at a 550 OC'd to 800 in front of me now ( I know..the shock of ME holding a AMD in my hands for longer than the time it takes to find a garbage receptacle...)

The resistors inside have been changed for 800 & 1/3 cache. Has the same Alpha cooler your pic shows with the same itty bitty little fan.

Loose the little fan...really!

Well done - it's the best way to learn - that's how I did it - I just bought what I was told I'd need and thought "hmm - well that looks like it should go in there so it does". I've progressed a lot from the "if it fits, leave it alone stage" now though....

Skybolt, great job! I built my first one recently and expect the case, mem and PS for my second any day. Great accomplishment.

Good job, Joe!!!

It looks a good-sized mid tower ATX case, and you've got excellent ventillation. I personally wouldn't worry about the stock Athlon cooling fan unless you're going to OC the computer or if you plan to run the computer at over 100°C ambient temperature (which is unlikely in Lowell!!).

Have fun, and again...good job!!!!!

Congrats man!!!! It didn't blow up like some peoples first computer at least... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

But it is true, there is nothing to it at all....

BTW* You don't need any more fans unless he decides to overclock, 90 degrees is a perfectly safe temp.
