I heard that they are gonna release their Sledghammer chip at the end of the year at 2ghz. Is Intel on the same pace as AMD? Which chip do you like more? I will post my opinion later.

i had seen an article at zdnet.that inel is working on the pentium4 and it was suposed to be 1.4ghz on 400 system bus.and to be released in the first qtr.of 2001.where did you get your info?

Everything I've read on the upcoming Mustang processor (AMD's next chip) is that it'll go to 1.5 gigahertz and will be released in Q3 2000. Intel expects to have the 1.4 P4 in the third quarter as well.

It's sort of a weird situation in my opinion. Although the non-technical public just sees the chip speed, us techies know its a different story. The Mustang and P4 will live or die depending on RAM and bus speed. If RAMBUS wins its lawsuit ALL RAM manufacturers will have to pay them royalties. That could really hurt DDR RAM's chances. Since Intel is backing RAMBUS and AMD is backing DDR, this lawsuit and Rambus's ability to fix its problems could literally decide the future of computing.

I'll take DDR over RAMBUS at this point. RAMBUS is way too iffy, its not stable, has many problems. Not my idea of a good time.

A guy over at www.hardwarecentral.com (http://www.hardwarecentral.com) has a willamette. Its gotten much publicity. Quite a story, i suggest you read it.

Please provide links to this 2Ghz stuff you're talking about.

EDIT: It supposed to come out next year not this year. Sorry about that.

I heard somewere that the Sledgehammer's chipset was going to be partially optical-based. I guess that this means that they will be using lasers and light conduits to transfer data between the CPU and memory; or something. Anyone hear anything about this?

I seem to remember IBM experimenting with a optical processor.

I saw a post at the bottom of the zdnet page, from the above link, that someone said ""Intel Inside" means Idiot outside!!!!!!!"

Sledgehammer is going to be a 64-bit CPU, Like the Itanium, Im not even going to worry about it right now, I believe its only really useful in servers.

I was just wondering... How much do you think it will cost?
