What accelerates faster?
A MIG or a tuned beatle (the car ;-)

I had yesterday a big discussion with some friends who said the beatle would be faster than a MIG over 500 meters.
I said no way, the MIG kicks in it's afterburner and swhoosh - it's gone.

What do you think?

PS: I would greatly appreciate an explanation that gives me good proof (physical laws, traction vs acceleration, aerodynamics etc)

well, a tuned beatle. Haha, my god, you will have to remodel the whole freaken car to achieve good aerodynamics. You will have to literally add jets to it. NOOO way will a beatle beat a MIG. A MIG is a JET, it travels wayy faster than any tuned beatle (unless the beatle has jets too). In 500m, if they both started in the same spot, then the MIG would either win or lose, It depends on how fast the MIG would warm up, and crank up it's afterburners. Of course, the beatle would already be moving. If it were concrete course, let a MIG do 500m, then let the beatle go 500m. Take the distance divided by the time. You will get the speed. Then compare the two speeds. That's how you'll know the average speed they both travelled. IF the MIG does lose, then it's probably for the delay it has to warm up. BUT... if they both go at the same time, with NO delays, the beatle is just toast.

well,,first of all. I would need to know specifically which Mikoyan Gurevich(MIG) is in question, and also, specifically which Beetle it would be competing against. Would it be a regular old Beetle(1500cc) i think, or the new Beetle. And what do you mean by "tuned"? Would this Beetle be naturally aspirated, meaning - would it be turbo charged or not. If it's the Mig-25 Foxbat, the fastest production military aircraft still in service, then i would say that the Mig would win hands down, no matter if the beetle was turbo charged/supercharged or whatever. Curiously enough - I have actually seen a F/A-18 Hornet contest a Holden V-8 Supercar(similar to NASCAR) in the quarter mile. For those of you unfamiliar with Holden, it's Australia's car, owned by General Motors and practically identical to Chevys mechanically.
Anyway, of course the race car got the holeshot, but it's didn't take long before the Hornet dusted the car.
But this is probably a bad example because I'm sure the power to weight ratio of the Hornet and the Foxbat differ greatly, as well as the Holden Supercar and the "tuned" Beetle. I would have to obtain some numbers, such as horsepower and pounds of thrust, and gross vehicle weight, but that would be difficult because things such as weight would be highly classified concerning the MIG, but more than likely, the mig, hell any mig would blow the doors off any VW Beetle.

actually ,upon reading your question again Variable. "What accelerates faster?" It would depend upon a few things. The Beetle would probably have a higher rate of acceleration say between 0-30mph, but the mig is not designed to have a high rate of acceleration at those speeds, but neither was the VW.

It's also going to have a lot to do with start-up speed. If both of the vehicles are starting cold the Beetle will win since the MIG pilot can't just turn a key and hit the afterburners. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

My guess is the Beetle.
