I've noticed that harddrives are getting hotter and hotter and that manafacturers arn't laying down cooling guidelines, 'cept for a few operating temperatures.
I burnt myself on a HDD last night, how many have done the same?
Never on a Western Digital! I hear IBMs are notorious for running hot.

Yeah - my Western Digital is dead cool - I burnt myself on a seagate 124meg after taking the muffler off it (I use HDD mufflers so I can use my computer when my parents are asleep). I've had a few unmuffled seagates burnout completly on me.

Mine doesn't burn me. That's what a hard drive cooler is for. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I have the Slim HD Cooler from http://www.plycon.com/hdcool.htm It works great. I have a temp probe attached to my hard drive and it stays the same as the system temp on the MoBo.

Fujitsus are real quiet and cool, but they are not barnstormers when it comes to performance :-)

Enable power mangement in windows
set harddrive spin off from 15min-30min
So it will cool down if not in use within that period.

Well that will work but a lot of people run RC5 on their systems which won't allow the hd to spin down. So then you really don't have a choice with that option.
By the way Samsung Hard drives run pretty cool themselves. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Actually, it's not that RC5 doesn't *allow* the hdd to spin down - you can set your hdd to spin down. It's just not recommended - setting hdd to spindown Never gives the best RC5 performance http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I didn't burn myself was shocked and amazed at how hot my old Maxtor 20GB got. I soon got a hdd cooler and ended up selling it in the long run. I have fans on 3 of my 4 WD 7200 rpm hdds. They all run much cooler than the Maxtors I have used. I did touch a CPU in an old P100 that had been running a while w/o a HS or fan and thought I was going to blister.

ick!! Melted! Sorry to hear it - I've always found qunatum's to be very reliable.
Dave - I got a few blisters off my 486 cpu.(I'm sure you've heard of my adventures with my 486 by now http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif)

While I've heard that HDD's can get hot and sometimes required cooling, I've never notice any of my WD drives to be any more than warm. Then again, I've never grabbed onto one right after Defrag either.

I just started using this power management thing in windows
With this I can have my computer on 24hrs a day and not worry about harddrive developing
bad sectors. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
It really cool, when it spin down
all is so much quieter, you can only hear
case fan http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Which is what I needed just to go to bed. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Turn the computer off, and all is too quiet
and I can't sleep.
When it spin back up, it take about 5 sec.
That it, everything work perfect, no lockup.
My harddrive that has bad sectors, is not developing anymore.
I'm still using my old 2.0 maxtor and 1.6gig maxtor in this new computer of mine
so far so good, no bad sector.
