I'm planning on building my own machine soon, and I was looking at getting a CD-RW. However, with all the DVD-RAM drives coming out, I am wondering: can you still write to CD-R (RW) disks with a DVD-RAM drive? I know that the DVD ram writes with a smaller diameter laser, but is that a problem? Someone clarify please. Thankx.

DVD-RAM cds hold 5.2gb. They can only read/write to DVD-RAM. Don't get one of these just yet because they are 1st generation and are bound to have bugs.
CD-RW is completely different. They are not compatible.

I expect that DVD-RAM can read CD-Rom & CD-R, the same way the a DVD and read CD-Rom and CD-R. I doubt that they'll read CD-RW, and most surely won't write CD-R or CD-RW. I wouldn't invest in one yet, but that huge capacity sure is tempting isn't it!

This one makes more sense. I've got to do a better job of proof-reading before I post.

By the end of the year (probably) you'll be able to buy a DVD-RAM drive that writes 4.7GB PER SIDE to a disc, and can be read in a regular DVD-ROM drive.
