I was gonna' upgrade one of my old 486's for the kids, you know. but wouldn't it be better to just get this rig, pull out my floppy and cd-rom, put it in this thing...
What do you all think of this deal in general???
Akimbooooooo
PS. When I copy and paste a URL into this message, why doesn't it show up as a hyperlink?? I've seen hyperlinks on other posts....just wonderin"

Here you go, read the faqs for easy instructions on using ubb code. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

The only thing I don't like about that deal is the MII, I have heard many bad things about that chip.

akimboooo (was that enuf o's? lol)
Also;
In your 'Post New Topic' or 'Your Reply' open dialogue window, scroll down a bit and you'll see a UBB Code link. That'll show you how to make those hyperlinks in your posts.

Lots of "O's" mean Akimbo Happy::: http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif you know, like slidin"
What about that chip, though, frogpuff. I mean, where does it stand in relation to the k6-2 333, which I use on my Internet machines and just love 'em to pieces.
Socalgal, what do you think??

For the purpose you intend to use it, at $299 it's not a bad deal, but do not think this will be upgradable at all, (you can buy a motherboard, with this chip, with onboard sound and video on pricewatch for $91) I personally do not like the Cyrix MII chips, they run real hot and just don't have the FPU to run games, in business apps ok, the actual clock speed of this chip I think is 233 MHZ, AMD K62-333 is much better chip

Also I didn't see any mention of USB ports, I don't know if this is important to you.

Do you mean the processor is not upgradable??
If chip runs hot, isn't it a matter of adding more cooling options to your case??
How fast is fast???
What is Pricewatch???
I mean, for most apps., wouldn't this machine just plain do!!!!!!!
Best http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif Akimboooooooooooooo
Akimboooooooo
when I said it probably wasn't upgradable, I meant the motherboard, (meaning adding a faster processor in the future, might not be possible some motherboards don't allow you to disable the onboard video or sound, thereby limiting video or sound upgrades also It might only have 1 or 2 empty ISA or PCI slots, limiting upgrades)
Fast is a relative term, in business apps, you probably wouldn't notice any difference between the Cyrix MII 333 and the AMD K62-333 but in games or 3D applications you would
PriceWatch, go here and check it out http://www.pricewatch.com/ it is a website that lists the price different vendors are charging for a certain item.
Yes for most App, this machine would be fine, I was just pointing out why it was so cheap, you usually get what you pay for.

I might pay 200 for it, and just swap out the CPU, but the M2s moto should be "**** without the smell" it is not actualy 333mhz, just equivelent to the speed of a pentium running 333, and with MMX that will be very easy to do.

Thanks for replies
So, the MII chips are not that great, I take it.
cobain1crt: did not quite understand this last line of yours,
"it is not actualy 333mhz, just equivelent to the speed of a pentium running 333, and with MMX that will be very easy to do."
What does the MMX refer to here??
Akimboooooooo (newbie)
Cobain is refering to Cyrix' method of speed-rating their chips in relation to Intel's. For example, the 6x86 PR200+ was their equivalent of Intel's Pentium 200. Supposed to function as fast or faster in benchmarks, and mostly does, but is really a 150mhz unit.
If you're thinking of a Cyrix, be aware of this system. The number you see is NOT a mhz rating.

The M2-333 actually runs at 250 mhz @ 83mhz bus speed....but also, $75 to ship?? I thought folks would get fed up with Onsale's shipping charges by now..

Sounds like an okay unit for web surfing, word processing, CAD...no wait. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif $75 for shipping though... Kinda reminds me of something I used to see alot when I was a Kid. "Free Tony the Tiger baseball!!!" (Just send 4 proofs of purchase and $4.95 s/h)
Hey, could these be the same guys?

No offense to Cyrix owners out there, but the M2 is a joke. DO NOT BUY A SYSTEM BASED ON ONE. Just find the whitepaper specs for the M2 and you'll notice something interesting. The basic floating point unit design is almost identical to the aging Cyrix 686, which it fpu was actaully closer to a 486 than it was a Pentium. As stated above, Cyrix "rates" their chips. Not only will they not actually run at their intended ratings, but the rating scale indicates integer performane only. A M2 333 is about on par with a Pentium 200 as far as fpu calculations are concerned. As for the heat issue, Cyrix has improved. Their cpu;s are slightly cooler than the old one, but still hotter than a similar k6-2. Go find an AMD or Celery based system, you'll be happier down the road. On an interesting note, I was browsing through my local newspaper today and saw the Staples ad. Their selling a system for $99.98 US (no monitor) after a rebate offered my MSN. You have to subscribe to MSN's internet service for 36 months to get the rebate, but it's still not a bad deal for entry level computing. I believe it to had a Cyrix cpu (wasn't I just bad-mouthing that?!), but my TI-92 calculator cost over twice the price of this system.
