I will be getting a new Compaq notebook in a few weeks. I was wondering if they include the stupid foolproof proprietary “quick restore” disk instead or the regular Win98 disk? I know they do on the desktops; do they also on notebooks?
Woops, sorry for the misspelling in the title. Of course I mean Anyone, not antone.

Yes they use a proprietary restore disk, they also waste your hard drive space by partitioning it into 2 drives C and D and using the D drive to hold the back up for all your software along with the restore disk. I own a Compaq Presario 1260 that I bought new just over a year ago. I had problems with the modem right from the start, Compaq replaced it, but I still couldn't connect any faster than 24k with the 56k modem, (I finally bought a 3Com PC card modem and it connects fine) I had other problems that their Tech Support (and I use that term lightly) never were able to fix. I have owned 5 or 6 laptops, and I will never by another Compaq, I would recommend a company called Sager. They advertise in computer shopper, and there are a number of companies that sell Sager laptops on http://www.pricewatch.com/

I am posting right now with a Presario 1247 laptop. The above post is correct. Compaq puts the files on your hard drive, and the only way for you to get the recovery cd is to call tech support and insist. They only want to give it to you as a last resort.
Why they feel I do not have a right to the OS on disc that I paid for is BEYOND ME. NEver buy a compaq, buy a toshiba, HP, or Sony and have less headaches.
