If a user unchecks the "always ask before opening this type of file" box and selects "Open", how can this be reset to display that prompt again? I just made the mistake of unchecking that box to sample the tracks (.m3u files) at Emusic.com. When I had IE 5.5, Winamp automatically opened .m3u files. Now I feel stuck using IE 6's built in media player. Here's the real problem: Now I have to right click and "save target as" to get the actual .mp3 file! If I left-click on the mp3 file, it automatically opens in Winamp! I've been scanning through IE's help, but no luck. Hope someone can shed some light here so I can get back to some serious downloading. Thanks.

This is a known problem caused by poor programming of other apps usurping the file extension -- in this case Winamp. Scroll down to the file-type in question (.mp3 extension) under View/ (File) Options, File Types. Double-click it. Check "Confirm open after download". Hit OK several times to exit. Viola.

Thanks for the response BFlurie, but that didn't work. Still, when I left-click on an .mp3 file to download, it automatically starts downloading it to a temporary folder, then Winamp kicks in to play it. This is driving me nuts. Any other suggestions? There's nothing I can do in IE6 to somewhat reset the default doanloading options?

In all similiar cases I've come across, my suggestion has worked. Winamp may be screwing your settings worse than the usual.

1. Is there any option in Winamp for removing file associations? If so, do it for .mp3 files & skip the next step.

2. Using the same file-type list as my prev post, remove the entry(s) for .mp3 files & hit OK to close.

3. Now, in Explorer, d-click any .mp3 file. You should now have an "Open with" window. Scroll down or search for the Winamp program & select it. Name the file type anything (You may want to name it the same as it's currently shown in the File-Type list), & hit OK to close.

4. Now, repeat the procedure I outlined in the previous post.

Your certainly right about my settings being screwed up. I've tried the steps you've posted but it still didn't work. So I just went back to IE 5.5. Thanks again for the responses.
