I am sitting in front of a behemoth. IBM PC XT running dos 3.3 on an 8088. Connected to it is an NEC Pinwriter P5 and it doesn't seem to be able to comm with the printer. The "ALERT and OP" are flashing and I feel a bit like someone trying to eat an elephant. Where does one even start????

Hello,

Firstly: when you start your XT does it wake up your printer?
If it dosen't than you have a problem with printer port or the printer cable.
If your XT wakes up your printer, then try to print using print command and just print some .txt file from the dos directory.
Some old printers (ex. dot matrix) have switches and they might be the source of trouble if you don't have the manual.
