Don't download any of there "hot fix" patches. I downloaded one (dirrectly from their web site) to protect my server from code red. It started acting funny right after that, today it was so bad that I decided to do a virus scan, and what do you know...the hot fix (as well as several kernal files) were infected with the fun love virus!!! I didn't even have a virus, and Microsoft decides to "protect" me by giving me a hot fix that had a virus in it! Linux gets more appealing every second, at least they have no "hot fix"s to kill my computer. How can Microsoft get away with this kind of garbage? I say never trust them again, if you buy a boxed OS from them, virus scan it, if you are woried about virii, get anti-virus software, or use housecall, but don't download anything from them. I just finished re-installing the OS, and let me tell you, I am not going to download the critical updates, the service pack, or even the internet exploiter update, no more "fixes" for me, if I want my computer "fixed" I will do it myself, with an ax.

I find that highly unlikely that you got the virus FROM the MS update. I have NEVER gotten a Virus from an Update from a true MS source

I also find this unlikely, but if it's true, we'll know about it in VERY short order... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

No problems with any of my updates in Win98SE or Win2k.
WinME is another story, of course its also the least used OS I use. ME is a bug on its own. lol

It must be, I downloaded nothing else, and the trend website even mentions the thing. I am just thankfull it did not kill my storage drive entirely, it did mess up a lot of files though, but I found a way to fix them.

This has happened before. Usually when it happens it happens from a mirror site like Conxion (I believe the source was conxion last time it happened) or if you're from another country its more likely as generally MS's own file source is fairly well protected. The problem you have to worry about the most with MS's patches, are the patches themselves http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Exchange recently took 3 patches to get one problem right http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

First patch really messed things up, 2nd patch attempted to fix the 1st patch but it messed it up again... I believe the 3rd patch got it right lol

Is it more likely that you had the virus before the download and this is how the patches could have been infected. I'm not saying you're not right. I'm just pointing out what is more likely.

It isn't likely MS had a virus because millions of people would be complaining about it by now.

It is likely, since Microsoft themselves give you a disclaimer when you opt for a download (check out thier downloads for IE 5.5)> But this mostly happens if you choose a mirror site. Their own sites are very well protected, indeed. I haven't faced any problem with them.

I've never had a problem with patches directly from MS, or any other vendor. I don't know about mirror sites, or other 3rd party sources, as I haven't downloaded from a 3rd party on the web.

As to whether or not the patch does what it's supposed to do, that's another matter.

I think it is more likely that you got it from a different source than MS.
