Not sure why Ghost wouldn't back up your *.SWP files. Maybe it depends on the version, not sure.
I normally boot up to a dos disk (win98 boot disk) with the Ghost.exe file on it, and then run Ghost from that to do my images and restores. That way I make sure that there are no files in use.
While Ghost cannot transfer from a fat16 image to a fat32 drive (and vice versa), it can and does restore images to drives/partitions which are not of the same original size, provided that the destination drive is large enough to hold the uncompressed and restored image.
So yes, you can restore your image to your drive after you redo the partitions, as long as the disk format (fat16 or fat32) is the same.
