Hi,
Well I'm an average gamer but feel that a more stable system is more important. I like to create music on my PC and stuff like that. The hardware i use is quite new and its good in my own oppinion. I hear that win 2000 is rock solid. Do you think I should switch from WINME to WIN 2000? I'd also like to know if the added stability is worth the decrease in gaming performance?
Any help would gladly be appreciated.
Thank you!!

Well, if your main concern is stability over gaming compatibility, definetly try Windows 2000. Not only is Win2k more stable than Microsoft OS's that use Win9x kernel (e.g. Win ME), it has more superior memory managment. Win9x is known to have major memory leaks where it doesn't like to return the memory that it and the applications use up causing you to use third-party utilities or reboot to regain the memory resource. As for Win2k, that isn't the case. You'll also notice a big performance gain when you use Win2k since it's a true-32bit operating system. However, if you want to use Win2k the way it was meant to be used, I would recommend that you have at least 256MB physical memory so that the OS won't access the swap file so much. After you install Win2k on your system, you may want to visit the link below to optimize the OS by changing some key values for the registry.

Also visit NT Compatible (http://www.ntcompatible.com/) to see what software and hardware is compatible with Win2k (aka NT5)...

I took it off my computer.

I had Win2K set up on a mobile rack-equipped HDD. Took it off and put Linux on that HDD.

The mouse works when the Win98 HDD or the Linux HDD are installed. No mouse at boot up about 1/4th of the time with Win2K.

I'll install Win2K on the next computer I build. If it works, fine. If not - CDs make good skeet.

Most definately on both questions in my opinion. I love my systems that run Win2K. I'm just about to the point that I will kill my win98se system that is my last holdout (Something you can do when you have 8 systems in your home network http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif)

I reply only to agree with Mntsnow and NDC-The only Windows OS I use on a regular basis is Win2K Pro.WinMe,I've heard said,is great if you dont install any additional software. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I have had no major OS related probs with it other that getting used to the subtle differences between the it and 9x.
Oh yeah-256MB of ram is the way to go!

Well if you are an average gamer then do what the rest of us do- dual boot 98/ME with 2000.
You will find many games will not work well or at all in 2k so for those you use 9x but everything else you will use 2000 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

And 192 - 256 megs ram for good gaming in 2k

I'm with mntsnow and NDC here. Been using win2K for a few months and have to say it has been far more stable than win9X/ME

But do as Cyclone2 says and duel boot then you can try them both out before you commit yourself.

Also in my experience Win98SE is more stable than WinME. I ran ME for a while before 2k and it kind of degenerated a little quicker than SE.
