I was going nuts trying to figure out what was wrong with 2 of my systems, and finally found it was due to the last Norton AV update.
Problems I were having was that the system was locking up at night and doing the Ctrl\alt\delete, would give me the message
"Msgsrv32 not responding" I would then be forced to use the reset button.
On one system, I have found a temp file approx 1.8GB (Yes GB), under:
C:\programs\common files\symantec shared\virus defs\(long number)
note- using Norton SW 2000, the long folder number may be different on your system.
The new virus updates will correct these problems if you are having them.
You can read about it here:
Problems encountered after updating to the June 16, 2000, or June 19, 2000, virus definitions (http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2000062209404206&src=hot)

Thanks for the warning. Will pass this along to the "Lord and Master", since he's been having trouble since his update. I haven't even though we both built the same type of system.

So.. THAT's what caused that error! Sounds like the symptoms I had here. Unbelievable.
Sure enough it happened to my comp sometime in the middle of the nite - while running an AVP deep scan.
Thanks for the heads up, Dave! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Sorry, it was rude of me not to leave a link for people without the Live Update.
Download Virus Definitions (http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download.html)
Hope everyone that had this problem has there system running sweet again. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

whycantya,
I'm sure this is what happened to your "missing" 1 or 2gb you posted about in "tech". Delete the temp file, re-install SW, de-frag, and update everything and you should be fine.

Does anyone that this happened to use Netscape for browsing and email? I wonder if my hang (long pause doing nothing when reading mail) in there (never happened before) is related to this.. can't wait to find out!
