I recently upgraded a Windows 98Se PC to Windows 2K and converted it to NTFS. I saw some minor errors in the EventViewer, so I tried fixing them using the DCOM editor (dcomcnfg.exe)& Services.

Well, I must have messed something up because some programs hang on startup when they worked before. They don't show any errors in the Eventviewer.

I'm at the point of wanting to start over but don't want to lose my programs. Of course, I didn't back up the registry before doing any of these tweaks.

My question is, if I run the Win2K installer again over my existing setup, will it overwrite my bad settings and keep my programs?

Yes. When you use the recovery option, all programs will stay intact. However, keep in mind that the recovery option doesn't always solve the problem. It's worth a shot though.

Maybe. It depends on where the problems are.

It will NOT fix problems that are beyond its ownership. For instance, if registry settings regarding a particular application are all wrong, installing Windows 2000 won't fix it. How could it... it doesn't know what applications need. All it knows about is itself. Removing the application and reinstalling it would make more sense.
