I'm very new to the linux world, and i'm currently waiting for it to finish installing on my other computer... Whats the difference betweek KDE and GNOME, which is better? which has more features? I'm installing mandrake 8.0 and I don't know which one to use.
Thanks,

I currently use KDE on my MDK 7.1 and SuSE 7.1 systems. Its more like the win9x desktop but still, its a lot more powerful than any GUI that MS has cooked up.I have the option for Gnome in the MDK login mgr, but, its not even there in SuSE.Gnome is different enough from KDE that I only fool around and experiment with it and use KDE as my main desktop.

Both of them are almost the same but I find KDE a little faster... like if it is more polished.!

Its easy to switch back and forth, I installed 8 not too long ago and wondered the same, finally decided on KDE, I think ya just gotta play around with it till personal preference kicks in...

i think both are good. kde seems a bit more a whole system to itself...
i don't use either myself.

I like GNOME best. KDE is nice, but GNOME is "free". The libraries KDE is written with are commercial, so using KDE or its programs doesn't help the open source community. GNOME also had more fun things to tinker with.

t048 got it dead on!! KDE and GNOME are very similar... Except that KDE is built off of the QT library which isn't totally free... Gnome is built off of 100% FREE software...
Gnome is known to be a little more stable than KDE but with the new KDE 2.2... that might change. I use KDE 2.1.1 and for me it's stable as a rock.
The biggest difference between the two is how it "feels"... KDE feels very windows-like. Gnome doesn't.
Also, most programs written for X11 will work in either KDE or Gnome, even if they are made to officially work on just one of the two. But if your looking for upmost compatability, go with Gnome. Most X11 programs are made to work on Gnome.
One thing that Gnome has going for it over KDE is it's customizability... YOu can make gnome look and act like no other GUI i'v ever seen... Install the new Enlightenment and you'v got one WILD looking desktop. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
But like I said.. it's really up to which one you like best. Your best bet is to try them.

My advice is: try them all and see which one you like best. Baciscally it's just a personal choice. Personally, I use KDE. Best thing is that we have a choice. Will M$ let you remove the windoze GUI and load up one of your choosing ? I think not !
