Hi there,

since my system is getting kind of "dirty" (missing dll's, excessive boot time, too much bluescreens, lots of little apps which don't like getting deinstalled...) I've decided to reinstall Windows right from the beginning.
Right now I don't know if I should stay with the W98SE OS or get the newer version of the same thing, the Millenium Edition. What do u think? Is there much difference? Any big compatibility problems? Do most apps and games that worked on 98 work on ME? Is ME faster?

(BTW, I'll install Red Hat Linux on a second partition, just to get rid of MS' scandalous monopoly situation. EVERY LITTLE LINUX OS/PARTITION HELPS TO GET TO A MORE FRIENDLY AND FERTILE COMPUTER WORLD!!)

(And sorry, my english may have some "bugs")

If you get the full retail version of WinMe, not the StepUp or Upgrade, you should be OK.

Personally, I would stay with 98SE, for better HW and SW compatibility. It's also easier to troubleshoot.
Get all the latest MS updates and security patches too, right after you do the fresh install.

You can still get the Update Version (which is alot cheaper then the Full verison) and still be able to do a clean install, just make sure you have your Windows 98 cd on hand cause the setup will ask it for proof of purchase.

Both Windows ME and Windows 98 has there flaws, for me Windows 98 is slower then Windows ME, Windows ME take tons more hard disk space with System Restore (which you can disable), Windows ME CAB files are copied to the hard drive during setup, so you don't the CD t install new driver.

Has of now I don't have Win98 WinME, I have now move to Windows XP Pro RC1, which I find alot better the others. I highly recommend WindowsXP RC1, its stable and come with most updated driver(except my Radeon Driver which have no Opengl support).

Win98SE is by FAR better than ME.

I'm not just saying that either.

Don't believe MS advertising, WIN 98 SE is much more stable and faster than WIN ME.

I am only a novice, but if i were you i would stick with 98SE, in fact i intend having ME removed and 98SE installed.

And ME takes as good as 1gig of harddrive space, according to my computer.

Why not upgrade to win2k? It's stable and fast.

OK, thank u everybody. I might install 98SE again. Perhaps IŽll even be able to install both OS on different HD's to check them out and decide by myself (Although it seems that most of u tend to prefer 98SE). Boohoo, those two OS will sure create one or the other conflict internal conflict... We'll see...

Thanx again,

I run Win 98SE and Unix AIX 4.2.1 at work and Win ME and Win 2000 Server at home.

I've found that 98SE and ME are both fairly stable as long as you download and install ALL of the updates, patches, fixes, and tweaks. I've had less problems with 2000 server as long as I don't try to install non-window-based apps.

I think that it's a matter of preference and what you're willing to live with.
