Ok, I just installed this, and it is definately the smoothest functioning Linux distro I've seen. But the whole download is about 1.3gigs! Man, and people complain about MS making bloated products.

And for all you folks with integrated audio, this is the first time I've ever heard the Linux sound effects. Which brings me to the actual question. There's usually a thumping noise (like turning on a piece of stereo equipment) when a sound starts. Also, each time an effect is played, it seems to be slightly mismatched on its length and will start a little late and "wrap around" the next time if that makes sense.

Or wait, make that two questions. Ok, Lilo refuses to install and just screws up windows. Unless I reinstall Windows, it will try to boot but only get as far as the "L" in LILO before freezing. The error it gave during install was this "Warning: Bios drive 0x82 may not be accessible"

Any ideas?

Where did you install LILO
in the MBR or the other option it gives you ?
also did you make a Boot Disk?

It didn't give me an option to install in different places, I'm assuming it's the master boot record of the primary hdd though since it screwed up windows.

And yes, I've got a boot disk.

Get and use GRUB for dual booting, it is superior to LI................

Don't know about the sound problem -I never enable the "system sounds" anyway, I just like sound from audio CDs and movie clips.

1.3GB? Yeah, well you are getting about 10x more stuff than Windows too, and that is just with the GPL (freebie) distribution. You can "whittle" down the install to a couple hundred MB but it is a daunting task to decide what is the bare minimum of packages you need to have a fully functioning system.

I may have to invest in a copy of RH 7.1 just to check it out - I am not that satisfied with Mandrake 8, it seems they broke a few things in Mandrake.

Where did you download it from?

I downloaded from here:
ftp://mrhankey.bizserve.com/pub/linux/redhat/ftp.redhat.com

Lightning fast. I set up two instances of CuteFTP and each one averaged 120k/s for a grand total of 240k/s on a 1.3 gig download.

Also, if you download, just get the CDROM ISO images, you can't just get all the individual packages anymore.

Where can GRUB be found?

Here:

Specifically:

Well, I downloaded it... and look, there it is! I installed the package (RPM), but now I've got it installed, and there it is! Nothing. Just sitting there , everything the same as before, and I can't seem to figure what to do next. I downloaded the "i386" version, I don't know that that's the right one though.
