I recently found this and got so excited by it that I wanted to share it with you all. http://www.forbes.com/tool/html/00/May/0524/mu5.htm
This company claims to have made cable modems so fast that everyone can have a dedicated connection of 40mbps! Plus- they say it will be priced at about the same rate as current cable costs! I can't wait.

Yeah but... where would they getting their bandwidth? While it sounds great (and i want it) it dosn't sound practical.
"Small Scale" example:
just think the company had a DS3 ~45mbps(?) and had 100 customers with this 40mbps connection and half of them got on Napster at the same time, your bandwidth would be gone. Now it takes more than 100users at $40/month to pay for a DS3 feed.
While it sounds good and still prolly bettern than the current, we will just be back to the same old story of bandwidth issues.

Ya, but they could divide the available bandwith between everyone online, and instead of maxing out at 1mb, you would run minimum speeds of 4.5mb, and when not everyone was online, others would get more speed.

The trick may be to put usage limits on connections. Not stupid limits, like 300MB/day or something, but not allowing 50GB/day worth of transfers. Something in between http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif. Bandwidth sucking fools who just set up napster-like apps, or their own servers (sometimes warez/etc.) and just download/transfer non-stop at max-throughput, 24 hours a day on a regular non-biz line, kinda **** me off. Clearly regular use of napster is ok, and even an occasionally used server (game or file), but extreme usage ruins it for everyone else IMO.
I'd be super happy with 10Mbps up/down.
