Im getting a new computer, with a maxtor Diamond 7200rpm UATA 66 20.4GB Hard drive.
I have a Quantum Bigfoot 3GB HD with all my files on it.(mostly i just wanna transfer mp3s though)
All i wanna do is transfer files, not applications or anything.
My motherboard doesnt support Ultra ATA but I have windows 98
Would I be able to just hook up my new HD to my old comp, format it, transfer the files and install windows 98?
Or would the mobo not detect the HD at all?

that should be fine. i did that with my new maxtor 30gigger. just plugged it up to my old p200mmx as slave and copied files over.

I tried that, when I put it on secondary slave the comp wouldnt detect it, so i put it on primary slave, and it did. But when I tried to copy any files to the new drive, The blue screen of death came up. (My monitor even printed "Out of Range" once) Also, It might be noted that while I was trying to use this drive, Windows would give me an error before it started up, saying that something was missing from System.ini or something, and it was required for Windows or a Windows application to run.
I really want this to work so i dont have to download 150 megs of mp3s I already have.

oh wait, never mind, i set it as secondary Master and it works. guess Maxtor drives dont like being slaves.

Well, that may not be the case - my dad's computer has a 1GB Maxtor as a slave drive. However, it may be that those two hard drives just don't like each other. I recently bought a 15GB Maxtor drive. It didn't like the 2.5GB Samsung drive I had as a slave drive on the same chain. Or a Quantum drive. So, I finally had to put the Maxtor drive as primary master, with a CD drive as the slave, and the 2nd hard drive and CD-RW on the secondary IDE chain. And I don't think I'll get a slowdown on the Maxtor drive because of the CD drive - both are UDMA 2 drives.

Hmmmm.. Interesting. I've never had two hard drives conflict with each other on the same ide chain.

Use Maxtor's MaxBlast software. It's on a bootable disk. Copy the entire old drive over to the new drive. You can use this between any two drives as long as one is a Maxtor. You should have the latest Maxtor software with your new harddrive. If not, go to Maxtor's website.
I have found this to be invaluable--and fast!
Hi, I'm about to biuld a new pc. I have some softwear on my IBM that I want to use in my new pc. Can I just buy 2 networking cards and use that. You know, like using my IBM as a server. Then my new pc can just get all the files from the IBM. Also, my IBM came with a softwear selections CD and it has some Config Safe(its kind of like a go-back program.) Norton Anti-Virus, games like Half-Life and all my downloaded mods http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif. Do you think I can at least save myself another day of downloading all my old files from the net? Sorry, I'm blind to networking, I don't know jack.

Yeah, I had tried the maxtor as both primary and secondary slaves, and that didnt work. It has to be a master. Keep in mind though, my other devices are not UDMA, since they are on my old comp.
I didnt want to do a image of my old hard drive with the maxblast software since I would get a lot of **** i didnt want, I only needed some files and mp3s.
Hey JC, instead of doing a network which would be complicated, just do what I did and stick your New hard drive into your old comp and transfer yer files.
