I salvaged a 2 watt / 12 volt fan from a Packard Bell that held a 120 MHz Pentium chip. It has a red and black wire leading from it. I would like to install this fan on my Abit VA-6 board. The three fan pin-sets on my Abit board have 3 pins each. Can I connect the 2-pin wire salvaged fan to 2 of the pins on a 3-pin connection on the Abit board?

Thx!

Yes, Of course. I do this often in a few of my systems, with similar fans w/ only 2 pin connectors.

You may be in a bit of different situation. You can try it. I would doubt anything bad would happen. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

i do the same, but i cram them into power connectors. Not safe, but effective. Make sure you get the right voltage to the right wire, or else you will have problems. Get a DDR and go to town.

Thx for the replies, Brandon and Wiz. I'm curious, if you know, what is the 3rd pin of the 3-pin fan connectors on the mobo for? The fan on my heatsink has 3 wires: red, black & blue. Again, the salvaged fan has just a red and black. What's the third (blue) wire for? A fellow customer I met at RadShack today suggested it may be for fan speed. What do you think?

Thx.

yes the blue wire is for fan speed monitoring
if that fan is a 2watt fan though I would not run it through the Mother board most internal case fans run on less than 1 watt of power 2 watts on a fan header might be just a little to much

your best bet is to tie it into one of the power supply molex connecters

Thx Scotter. I think I best go fan shopping to be certain!

i'm most certain it's a speed monitor. uhm... it's not necessary. you can plug that in a 3 pin fan mon on your mobo with NO problems. Well, hopefully, but i'm like 99.9% sure, it will be no problem.
