Can I just change the Product Key in the registry? My sis formatted and reinstalled WinMe on her system and used the wrong CD key. I now have two systems with the same product IDs. I have already found the registry entry in HKLM>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion for the product key but am aware that the product ID is created by an algorithm during setup.

Will Windows automatically calculate a new product ID if I edit the product key in the registry?

My answer would be "most likely", although I have never tried it. If you really want to take the time to do it, just backup the registry first. Personally, for home based systems(that you have legal licenses for), I wouldn't bother.
