I just read a newspaper article that says IBM will announce today a chip which doubles memory capacity by using data compression and cache.

(a subject I've seen discussed at SysOpt but no one thought it would be fast enough)

Anyone heard of this, I can't find anything on the web. They say it will only be for the Netfinity servers first.

Looks like it's pretty high end stuff, but someday....

They claim it's 10,000 times faster than software compression!

Like SW compression, it's probably not linear. That 10,000x figure probably applies to text files, and executables prob have a different compression.
