What do you think about the Dell Dimension XPS Z733?
Specs:
Intel P3 733mhz
256kb advanced transfer L2 cache
Intel Solano II chipset ( == i815e? )
Special Intel Mobo, designed for Dell
128mb 100 mhz SDRAM
30 gb UltraDMA/33 EIDE (7200rpm)
12x DVD soft decoding drive
32 MB Nvidia TNT2 M64 AGP
SBlive value
56k V.90 Data/Fax/Voice modem
Harmon Kardon 595 speakers
15" E550 monitor
+ software

My father has the oppertunity to get one through his work, for a (so called) discount.
It costs 4299 guilders (includes taxes) == About $1950 US.

Do any of you think it's worth it?

What country uses guilders?

Dell is in my opinion the most reliable manufactured computer out there. Is it worth 4299 guilders? I dont think so but I build my own. If you are capable you can build a nicer system for alot less. Chances are he is getting it using payroll deduction and could not do that with a custom built sytem. If thats the case then yea its worth it. He wouldnt be unhappy thats for sure.

Why not look here? www.dell.com (http://www.dell.com) Look for a comparable system and don't forget to add shipping. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Dell is by far the best brand name computer manufacturer in my opinion. I'm about to get my 2nd Dell in a few weeks. They have better deals than Gateway and you can customize more. Yes, building your own is cheaper, but only if you have the knowledge.

Jman,
not everyone lives in the states!!, Guilders are Dutch currency, even I know that.

I have a Dell laptop, very good, excellent support.

I have a Dell XPS T500. I use Gateway at work. I find that Dell is a far superior PC. You cannot beat the technical support, either. I paid $99 extra for three years of at home technical support. My hard drive went bad. The next day the tech came to my house with a 30G Quantum Fireball drive 5200RPM to replace my Maxtor 17.2 Gig. I still had a problem..turned out to be the modem...and the tech was at my house three days in a row. The last time he stayed and installed my windows 98 and my drivers to make sure everything was OK. I don't think you can beat that.

A friend is on her 3rd Dell including 1 notebook, newest is an XPSB933r, has a PIII 933, Maxstor 40 7200, Gforce2 GTS, 512ram, 12x DVD, 32/8/4 CDRW, SB Live value, HK Speakers and 19" Trinitron mon, she ordered it w/the wireless network system, and it maxed out at over 4K$, she loves Dell obviously, the ability for service is a bonus for her, although she hasnt had probs, it does make my 600e @ 900 alot more valuable, as far as I can see...(well, at least to me) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I am fully aware everyone don't live in the states. My question simply was "What country uses guilders"? Now how does that apply to your statement? Hmm...? Thanks for enlightening me with Dutch currency.

I agree. If I had to buy a 'manufactured' pc, it would be a Dell hands down. They are really the best value. I like to goto their webpage and just try to configure the best **** PC I can think of with all their options (made a server that cost over $500,000 once...that was fun!).
I think that if you can get a Dell overseas for that price, I would jump on it!!
My friends always ask if I can build them a better PC. I honestly can't say "Yes". When you add in their tech support, warranty and other items, they are winners hands down. Now, I COULD build a PC to my liking and my exact specs with the exact hardware that I want...but Eventually, sometime in life, even I will probably buy a Dell http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

Thanx for all your responses. My father can pay it using his spare free days. He doesn't use them all anyway.
And well, guilders will be gone in a year or so anyway.. We'll be getting the Euro here in Holland http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

Adn abou the shipping, I believe it's already included in the price. At least it says here they'll deliver it all the way to your house. I said earlier that the price included tax, and it does, but there a big chance we'll be getting that back anyway.

Nanonyth,
You could always come to England, if you would rather have pounds, we are still resisting the federalisation (just).

Shipping is not included in the price, judging from my past experiences. In the states, it's about $100 for standard shipping. I imagine international shipping would be quite a bit higher. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

The exact conversion is $1,825.95 USD. http://www.xe.net/ucc

I would change two things on that computer. I would not get that video card (I am pretty sure I have heard bad things about those cards) and I would get a 17" monitor. Other than that it looks like a nice box to me. The price is not to bad if it includes tax and shipping.

I agree that Dell is the best manufactured pc,
but think about this: Im building a pc right now with the
same specs as a Dell dimension that costs 1599, but im building mine
for about 1150. Some parts are actually better than the dell parts.
Of course, if you aren't as technically inclined http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif I'd definetly
recommend Dell, what with their technical support and online service.

Actually we in Holland call it a "Gulden"
But it's not that strange a name... what about your Pound Sterling, or Rupia or Dinar http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I think Dell has switched to selling SoftModems/WinModems with their system, I'd watch for that and see if you can get a Hardware modem. For that price i'd accept nothing less.

If I had to buy a pre-built system it would be Dell or Micron, they seem to be pretty respectable from all fronts, unlike some other companies.
