http://www.linuxvideo.org I just got the oms player up and running on my SuSE 7.1 box and I'm actually watching DVDs in Linux! Cool!

The framerate is a bit slow and the video is a little dark and a tiny bit jerky but crystal clear.

I have installed the latest version with no errors but how do I actually run/configure it.

I am running Mandrake8 with Pioneer DVD drive.

TIA

Eddy

Got it running with "omi_gtk" but wont detect a source disk in the drive http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

The drive is a multi-region running US disks, could this be the problem?

Error:

"error opening device dvd:/device/dvd for scanning"

TIA

Eddy

Got it working by installing libcss http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Unfortunately if I try to resize the window (or do anything else) it crashes out http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

What do you use instead of "omi_gtk" CMonster?

I meant the software, not the hardware. The player just reads the disc. The software does the decoding.

I was under the impression that there were no licensed players yet available for Linux. There are ways to play DVD's using DeCSS, however, which is a reverse engineered decoder with questionable legality. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

The first site and program I mentioned carries a disclaimer that states something to the effect that the decoder may only be used with DVDs that you legally own or are in legal possession of.

keep in mind that DVD players/decoders are basically alpha software in Linux

xine will also play some DVDs

Is this a legal licensed player or does it use DeCSS? Players using DeCSS have been available for a while.

Legal player I think, got it multi-region from the shop (jumper on back of drive). I have not hacked about with it in any way.

omi_gtk should start the player and then look for a message in the terminal windows that reads like, "Should I check the Internet y/n" enter "n" and it should check the DVD drive if the drive is properly configured -you may want to create a link called "dvd" in the /dev directory that points to the actual device "hdc" (or whatever). I haven't got it to work using only the GUI front end either.

Also look into xine http://rpmfind.net/linux/sourceforge/xine/
