I'm temporarily running my old Klamath P2-300 cooker @ 361 in the case I've just upgraded for overclocking. I had the case open to tinker and noticed the mobo temp reading had reached 104F. I put the cover back on and now its 95F.
The secret? The new case exhaust fan is moving 50cfm. With the shell off, the airflow was too scattered.
The fan is a Comair-Rotron Flight LT CR0812UB-A71GL. About $12 or so, from Newark Electronics. It makes a somewhat loud "whisper", but not a trace of "whine".

Could this be the first time a temp reading is lower with the case ON?

Hey! I don't think that is so Socalgal. A friend of mine warned me against running w/o my case. He said that the design of the case [if it's a good one I guess] improves airflow and ventilation. I guess that's the "case" here!

Thanks. Ordered one.

yes, case design is important. I run LOLA with it off or at least unscrewed most the time heh
As Roy has just shown, I guess it just depends!
I should add that an easy way to connect these fans is to simply bend the stripped and tinned ends of the RED(+) and BLACK(-) wires back on themselves and stuff them into a spare drive power connector. The YELLOW = +12v and either BLACK = Ground. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

My case is always on, the screws are on my desk for easy access, but I run a lot cooler with the case on, even my 486 system runs cooler with the case on! I would say, "case closed", but no.

cobain1crt - and why not?
UPDATE - The P2-450 @ 527 is back in the case. I can't believe how cool it is running. Tcore was 167F, now 163F. Case temp was around 95F, now 86F.
This fan is more than I had hoped for. It's positioned for exhaust, just below the PS (also exhaust). My next step is to turn on an identical one at the bottom front of the case for intake. If it makes a difference, I let you know. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif
FOLLOWUP - The second fan only added to the noise, and for some reason in the front mounting it has a little whine, too. Tried 2 units, both the same.
