I have two 30.7 GB IBM Deskstars:

On the Primary Master Drive, I partitioned 10 primary gigs for Win2k, and a 20 gig logical partition for data storage.

On the Primary Slave Drive, I also partitioned a 20 gig logical for mirroring the storage data. How would I get Mandrake to run on my 2nd primary slave HD? I've tried making a 5 gig primary with a swap and put the bootloader lilo on that partition but when the system booted ( I use Bootmagic on the MBR) I choose to load the Linux partition (HDB1) and then it goes to the graphical lilo and then tries loading linux and stops.

Anyone know how to run it on the 2nd HD?
Thanks.

I installed Mandrake 8 on the second drive first, before adding any Fat32 partitions. I know Mandrake 8 is supposed to not have the limitation of istaling on the front 1024 blocks of the drive but that could be a problem. Not sure. CMonster? Linux_guru?

Let me be sure I understand:

1. You have no problem installing Linux onto this partition, all the files are copied and at the end of the install you put LILO/GRUB in the first sector of the Linux partition?

2. Boot Magic brings you to the LILO/GRUB boot loader from where you toggle to boot your Linux install (e.g. vmlinuz on HDB1 or something like that) but it just hangs there?

You must must have a very recent version of Boot Magic because I don't remember BM even working on partitions larger than 8GB or being able to boot W2K.

I'm still waiting for my boxed set of Mandrake 8 (!Do you hear that Mandrake-Soft?!).

I don't know exactly what issues you have there but it sounds like everything should work unless the bootloader does not specify the correct partition, or there is some boot parameter missing like ide2=hdb1 or something like that if you have the drive in question on an ATA-100 controler (perhaps Mandrake 8 already includes automatic recognition and install on ATA100 controlers so that may be a non-issue). Sorry I can't be more helpful.

While not related to your problem, one thing I would suggest is that when possible use a primary partiton - they are easier to recover if the partition table ever gets toasted.

Thanks for the help. I've tried many different things. When I figure it out I'll be sure to post what I did.

Maybe you can't install on slave drives?

Im gonna try to figure it out now.

You most definitely can put Linux on your 2nd HDD (or any other disk).

Check my earlier post here: http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum9/HTML/003412.html

My primary master (6.4Gb) currently has WinME and primary slave has Linux. Not sure what bootmagic is, but you dont need it. Read the post & you should get the idea.
