I'm going to help my neighbor install a Maxtor ata/66 15G hard drive. She has an old p-166. Will I just be able to plug this in? Will win95 recognize the size? If not is there a patch?
I told her it isn't worth the performance hit that she'll take to upgrade to win98. Am I right?

It's going to depend on what version of Windows 95 she is running. If she has the A version then you will be limited to 2gb partititons and your going to have to create 8 partitions for a drive that size. If she has Windows 95(b), then you can format the drive as FAT 32 and have no partititon size limit as far as Windows goes. One problem you may run into is that older BIOS's are sometimes limited to only recognizing up to 8gb. Sometimes you can get a current BIOS to correct this, but that depends on who made the MB and if they still support it.

Thanks again Dave. your always the first to help me. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif
I'll ask tomorrow what 95.
Unfortunatly it is a HP. I'd rather not try flashing her bios. Will it work by partitioning under 8g?
I'll talk her into a full upgrade eventually so she would be happy with just using 8G for now. Could I do this?
