Won't the use of a controller card with its own BIOS circumvent a BIOS hard drive size limitation? Dell makes this recommendation. The purpose would be to avoid using EZ drive and avoid the potential disaster that a BIOS update could cause. Also, not every BIOS has an available update. See Discussion re: EZ drive at http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/006941.html. I am contemplating using a controller card on a 233 mghz Dell to circumvent the hard drive size limit. Has anyone tried this?
Yup. One of the Promise Technology cards will work great. Goto www.mwave.com; (http://www.mwave.com;) controllers; promise.
They list a couple "bios extender" cards, but I would think the PROMISE ULTRA 66 PCI ULTRA-DMA/66 for $20 would be fine also. What you really need is the Ultra33, but I don't think it's made or is available anymore.
Goto www.promise.com (http://www.promise.com) to read up on their controllers.
