OK, So the Army is trying to fight in the year 2001 with 1990 software.

My boss has a new laptop (Toshiba Cel-700 w/128Mg and 6,4 etc...) where he needs to run an MS-DOS 6.22 application that keeps accounting. When installed, it creates an extended partition (D: drive) to install the software. It "HAS" to boot on this fasion in order to work - C:, DOS622, autoexec/config directs it to D: and this program works.

Until 2??? when the Army has promised us a 'new' version that is suppost to run in a windows plataform, we are really stuck with it.

Situation:
At this moment the Laptop has DOS 6.22 loaded with this software and It works fine. It has a D: extended partition for tha accounting software and all.
It has a 5.7Meg or so of disk space free.

QUESTION:
What version of Windows (95/98/Me/NT/2K/??) can I install on an additional partition(same drive) AND HOW??? in order to have a simple dual boot option that my boss would chose when turning the machine on. In it he could go up or down and press enter to boot that OS. In case he would need to change OS's, I will tell him to turn it off, and on again.

One of his brown nosers tried to do it and it all got messed up. I NEED HELP.

THANKS in ADVANCE,
Manuel

If you do a search on here you will find a lot of info on dual booting nearly any OS, some without needing 3rd party s/ware.
I cheated and use System Commander 2000 for various OS's which gives a scroll type option on boot up. Its about 3Mb installed & automatically sets up the partitions for you and hides each OS from the other. Info here: http://www.v-com.com/product/sc2_ind.html

Hey "SNS", you would not happen to have a zipped copy of that around that you could send me to manuel.delgado@usarc-emh2.army.mil, Would you? Just so I can try it!

Simplest solution would be to have any windows version you want on C:, and to use a DOS 6.22 boot floppy to boot DOS and run the DOS software on D:.

As much as I like to check out s/ware before I buy (demo versions) that would amount to piracy even if both of us had the best intentions. I am really happy with the program and have had no problems with it. A search here would probably come up with a few replies I have spruked on about it. Sorry mate.
This might help http://www.xosl.org/ I downloaded it but have not had the need to check it out. It looks like a similar idea and is/was free.

Don't you love it when brown nosers do that!

Any way, I would create a boot disk in the DOS enviroment with the dos command:
format a: /s
this will create a system boot disk
Then copy your:
autoexec.bat and config.sys files to the bootable floppy.
Install your Windows product as a seperate stand alone os as opposed to an upgrade from your present os (DOS).
After everything is installed and working throw in the boot disk at start up when you need to go into dos.
I only have experience with NT4 and Win95 as a dual boot to DOS and both of them left my DOS alone NT even provied me with a dual boot window when the computer started up(not sure about 95 - too long ago)
Hope this helps.
****make sure you install any of the newer OS's to your existing FAT 16 partition (hard drive) do not be tempted to convert it to FAT 32 or you will loose your DOS 6.22****
(I hope that's where our brown noser went wrong)
