system is VERY slow to boot all i got that loads on bootup is norton anti virus and crash guard (same as i had with win 95)
just now the system is half the speed.
would there be any other devices loading i cant see? im almost ready to go back to 95'.

the ram is ok, i watch the mem check on boot up and its all there

In general. win98 is bigger and slower than win95. But, click on Start->Run and type MSCONFIG. Look in the startup tab for item that are loading at startup.

there is:
crashguard, scan reg, task mon, systray, instant access,
reg drop handler, nav default, email protect, mouse, power profile, norton auto protect, tweakui, reg drop handler, load power profile, csinject.exe.

if 95 worked for you then stick with it...with the older systems 95 was much faster and there really isnt alot of difference with all the upgrades to 95 you could download..if you dont NEED 98 then go back to 95

Yeah, I think a Crash-Guard type program had it's usefulness with say win 3.11 or so, but with 98, I'd show it the door.

Also, set your virtual memory to say 150 min, and whatever you free max is. Then use cacheman to manage your memory. With 64 mb ram, I'd suggest trying the win98 - low memory setting and go from there.

Good luck.

Oh, and in MSCONFIG, you can de-select entries in the startup section by simple removing the checkmarks. In this way, it'll still be there, you're not removing anything, just disabling it.

So if you decide to re-enable it, you just go back, add the check mark and re-boot.

Is there an equivalent to "msconfig" for win95? I've got two things loading now I have no idea how to get rid of any other way.

anything that is created by norton hogs ram. also i see you running crashguard. that seems to casue more problems than help.
