i want to try linux out but i am trying to find the right 1, are they mostly all the same or not...

Mandrake (imho) is the best distro for newbies and power users alike. The current version is 8.0. Highly recommended. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Neither. Shareware still has to be paid for, too, but Mandrake is completely and utterly free (if you can take the 1200MB download). If you can't download that much (like if you have a 56K modem), you can buy the CDs for not too much (the only thing they are charging for is the delivery of the CDs, not the software), once they come out.

A great place to get Linux distros is from here:
