I want to install NT on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 7500). I know that Workstation would be the better choice, but what I'm wondering is if Server would work. I would be using a PCMCIA network card and that's the only hang up I can think of. It won't be used as a file server or anything like that. I would actually have it on there for testing purposes. It's just that there are some tools in Server and in the Server resource kit that I would really like to use so I'd rather not go with Workstation. Let me know.

Hello,

Yes, you can (I know for some Toshiba laptops eg Tecra), but NT is not so friendly oriented for a laptop. Use it for testing purposes and prepare all necessary drivers for NT.

Windows 2000 is far better for laptop use. I would recommend that instead, if possible.

medo, it sounds like you've done this before.

Joel touches on a good point. Why use NT when 2K has replaced it? If you have tho buy a new license anyways, go for 2K.

BTW, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you run many of those tools on workstation (NT4/2K)??

Why would you want to run NT Server on a laptop ????????????? Who or what are you going to serve ??

The only difference between NT w/station & NT server, is a bit of extra software and a few registry mods. So, the answer to your question is - Yes, it can be done, but like Joel says - W2K is a better option. NT is starting to show it's age and M$ are no longer releasing service packs (fixes) for it.

Setting aside the differences between NT4 and W2K, there are really no reasons that server wouldn't work.

It'll have higher resource requirements than workstation, but I the PDC for the machine I'm on now is a 486 with probably 16 MB of RAM and it works fine (4-5 computer domain).
