nevermind I've been searching and there seems to be a lot of users who have claimed that this router is a bit slow.

Not sure if its similar, but I have the Linksys DSL/Cable router. Its a 4 port router with an uplink port so you can attach another hub/switch to it (which I did--added a Linksys 100mbit 16 port switch). This router is quite nice. Only downfall is you can only have one IP outside the protection. Also makes napster and other programs a bit hard to use (ICQ msg's have to be sent thru the server, etc). But for protection, it does its job quite well (Its also a firewall). You configure it thru a web browser, and it acts as a DHCP server too. Speedguide.net did a nice write up on it.

I also have a linksys firewall/switch/router/hub (Befsr41) and I am very pleased with it. I looked around before I bought it and I feel that you get lots of functionality for the $ that you spend on this unit ($150.00 US (approximately) / $270.00 CDN). It was really easy to set up, so easy that I thought I had missed something. My only complaint is that the led's are too small as they can only be seen from directly in front of the unit. Now that it is set up I don't watch them so it isn't really a problem. I don't notice any speed difference between going throught the router to access the internet and directly connecting to my cable modem. I highly recommend it.

I noticed a slight difference when I went to the computingcentral.com's speed test. But when I was downloading from MS's beta FTP site, I was still getting 300-400kbps. so, no loss!

dslreports.com visitors have been complaining about the Linksys. Dropped connections and corrupted downloads they say... but I went against the advice of a few and bought the 4-port Linksys anyway. Perhaps it was a DSL problem or something because I haven't seen anyone say they've had a problem with a cable internet connection. It's been perfect for me. No special settings for Napster (it's even in their FAQ)... didn't try ICQ though.

Anyway, that Netgear RT311 is an alternative and goes for slightly more than the 4-port Linksys. The RT311 doesn't have the switch capability of the Linksys either. But apparently the RT311 have saved some users aggravation...

I still like my toy better... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

rh71, I had some initial connection (slow/lost) problems with my linksys but I d/l'd the firmware update and it's been smooth sailing since.
