I am going to purchase a new computer with a 30 gb hard drive. One of my friends told me i should partition it putting
the operating system on its own drive to make it run faster. Someone else told me that the partition would just take
up more memory. Can anyone clear this up for me?

Yes it is indeed a good thing to partition your hard drive. I would make a 2GB partition for the OS, and then four 7GB partitions for the rest. Then install all your apps and stuff on any of the 7GB partitions. You will find that windows will zoom along faster, and defragging the C drive (the one with the OS) will be much quicker. I just hope that you didn't buy any of those nasty proprietary systems with the lousy restore CD's instead of the real Windows CD. Oh, and the partitions won't take up memory, they are part of the hard drive, which is storage space, not memory, with the swap file being the exception.

What does anyone think about partition magic? Is that the way to go or should i just use FDISK?

Partition with fdisk when you are doing a clean install of windows; use Partition Magic when you want to partition your drive without losing your data. These are the basic considerations;there can be other issues that arise that someone else here could answer more fully.
