System is 550 P3, 384 ram, ati rage 128, currently running WinME.

Heard you cannot install Win2k from ME? Is that right?

However, have tried to clean install Win2k twice, starting with a 98 s/u disk, then using Win2k's BOOT disks; also tried to upgrade from Win95

What happens: In the middle of installation, as the system is looking at my HW&SW and the blue line is creeping ahead a little beyond half way...the syste immediately changes to a black screen with row and rows of white things that look like "backward commas."

Is this my ATI video card? Or any other clues. (It's an ATI Rage 128 AGP)

You probably have a hardware conflict with W2k. Usually before it attempts to install, it will generate a compatibility report on the hardware it detects. I have ATI Rage 128 AIW AGP on my backup and it is working fine with W2k, so I suspect some other hardware. If your computer runs ok under Winme, then go here; http://microsoft.com/hcl/hclmain.asp
and check your hardware, including BIOS.

to install Win2k clean, you dont use a win98 start up disk. you just boot with the 4 win2k boot disks(hopefully you have created, which can be done in dos with the cd) and it will walk you through easily asking for one disk then the next.

You do not need any boot disk to install Win2k. Just get into the BIOS and set boot sequence to look for CDROM first. Put your Win2k CD and boot directly from it. It will then give you the option to install. Win2K installation is one of the easiest of all window OSes.

But as mentioned above, check to make sure you do not have any incompatible hardware.
