Keys go nuts

What causes the "problem" where you will be typing along just fine and then all of the sudden things will change and the keys pressed will open other applications...ie like typing text and pressing 'r' and the RUN box pops up, or hitting TAB causes your screens to change...rebooting always fixes it, but why does it do it and can it be fixed without rebooting

Sounds very much like a virus ! Make sure you have a good virus checker, with the latest signature file & do a scan.

no, it's not a virus...I thinks it's some sort of a shortcut/hotkey sort of thing

I've seen stuff like this happen under Win95, but not since then......

It appeared to be that the keyboard controller (or the OS' keyboard handler, one of the two) thought the Alt key or the Windows key was pressed when it wasn't. Try repeatedly hitting whatever key is stuck in the software (Run popping up when you hit R is the Windows key, windows switching with Tab is Alt, and there are others -- you just have to know the actual key combination to get which key is "stuck") to hopefully clear it. Or reboot. Sometimes I had to do that, but most of the time if I just hit the stuck key a lot it would clear.
